It amuses me when people say they used "the brute force method" or learnt "by rote" because they are not really saying anything specific about what they actually did. Also often they say they "don't need a system" - but of course they use a system, they just happen to label it "brute force" or "rote". It is interesting to hear more detail about what approach they actually used. EG how many cards they tried to learn per day. How they tested themselves. What they did if they got stuck. And of course how well it worked. (There is a thread on the Café somewhere I read about someone who had "learnt" a stack and "only" needed about 30 seconds to remember each card!!!)
Anyway, here are a few principles about how we learn that I have picked up during my life - We remember things that are unusual, funny etc. Things that stand out. This is the basis of HL's system for creating interesting images to remember boring information like numbers & playing cards. We remember things much better if we write them down, rather than just reading them. (If you write a check-list, you often don't need to look at it). This is used by Juan Tamariz in one of his suggestions to learn Mnemonca (or any stack). We remember information that is related to other things we know. Eg you might remember the name of a new acquaintance by mentally linking them to a friend or film star with the same name. When you test yourself, you will learn much quicker by not giving up too soon, and looking at the answer. This is why I believe it is useful to use a system, or at least create "clues' for yourself. Each time you succeed (no matter how long it takes) you take another step in the right direction. |

If you're going to use a peg system, I would suggest looking into Bob Farmer's system for assigning words to cards:
It's better in my opinion than the typical peg systems because the associations come value first, then suit. For example in one typical peg system, the peg words for Four of Clubs and Four of Hearts are CaR and HaiR respectively. Why? Because C stands for clubs and R is the mnemonic numeric alphabet for 4. That requires you to reverse suit and value, as well as memorize the mnemonic number alphabet. But Bob's peg words for those two cards are ForK and ForeHead. Both start with the value sound, "Four" and the hard K in fork is reminiscent of Clubs and the H in Forehead leads you to Hearts pretty naturally. One way to memorize a deck is to assign one card a day and work on it while doing another task. An example would be commuting to work; take a single card and place it near the dashboard where you can see it without obscuring your vision. Now think of its stack number and value while you're driving. If you're using a peg system add that in as well. The next day place the 2nd card in the stack and repeat the previous day's card and add it to the next card's information. Continue this way throughout the deck and in a month and a half you'll have the order down pat.

If you studied Harry Lorayne’s systems well, it shouldn’t take you more than half an hour to memorize a stack...

There is also a "peg" methodology in the Encyclopedia of Card Tricks by Jean Hugard, a book that should be on all card magicians' shelves.
It's in the last chapter on the Nikola Card System. |
