Canvas Covered Box by Abbott's. Does anyone do this besides Siegfried and Roy? They did it in their early days in Las Vegas.

I only live a 100 miles from Abbott's and could never learn the secret to this transformation. Yet no one does it! They always 'cheap' out on the straight wood crate that anyone could come up with a solution for to satisfy their curiosity, correct or not.

Actually not my Logic. I personally think there is a difference between Exposure and Teaching I was just stating that I know those who don't.
I was simply trying to illustrate that exposure is not a simple black and white issue. Not all exposure is bad because it falls into the teaching inspiration category. I don't neccessarily view the museum's display as a bad thing and compare it to a library having books on magic available to the general public.

I know magicians who are curious as to why Steinmeyer wasn't taking to task for his latest book as he deliberately exposes many secrets still employed by working magicians in it.

It's all a matter of degree.

Also the reason not more people are doing the canvas covered version of the sub trunck is that it takes way too long to lace the canvas covering up. Many I'm sure correctly assume that this is far to cumbersome to be an improvement to the overall effect.

Houdini himself exposed secrets all the time in order to deliberately sabotage the shows of rivals. Having shown how the 'other guy' does it (co-incidentally precisely the way Houdini himself had done it before) he'd have excellent publicity with built-in misdirection for when he did the escape another way in his own show.

Exposure of the tabloid kind, such as masked magician specials, works on the basis of massaging the target audience's intelligence and setting themselves up as a crusade against those cheap magicians who want to keep everybody ignorant and exploited. Play the big crybaby and it just re-inforces that view.

The pro-wrestling and magic comparison was discussed at some length in this thread; http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......7&21 . There's a bit more in my essay there on how wrestlers have started using the "little bit of knowledge" style of kayfabe to their advantage.

Payne,

I would think the key distinction between exposure and teaching is that in the case of teaching the student has expressed an interest in learning the secret in order to perform the effect. In the case of exposure, it's teaching a secret just so people know how it's done.

When I first started performing magic, I had a friend who said she really wanted to learn how to do some magic. I taught her a few tricks and found that she lost interest immediately. I realized her only interest was in knowing how it works.

Since that time, I will only teach magic to students who have made an effort on their own to learn a few tricks that require a minimum amount of skill. Only when they have done that will I help them.

Those with real interest will go to the library or to the bookstore and pick up a book and learn some magic. Those who only want to learn secrets never bother.

The secret to the canvas covered box can be found in the Classic Illusions book vol 1 by Paul Osborne. It give good explanation for performing it. ~Tim
