I am missing Gallagher's great posts. Has anyone heard from him?

Here in Pennsylvania, USA, we are still under stay at home orders although more businesses will open on Monday. I am enjoying the online magic, including the work Doug Conn is doing with buskers from New Orleans.

I had a PM from him March 23rd. I see he last posted April 8th.

But,..

Monika and I have been 'shut-done', on the Streets....understandibly so. 👍

We were incredibly 'lucky'(?), we had played thru the winter. 🙃

The German state, where we are registered, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern,
has been extremely 'helpfull' and giving. ($)
...unbureaucratic and willing(!). 🤔
.......we didn't even ask.

Somehow; overwelmed,..time-on-my-hands,..some loose-coins in my pocket,..
I slipped into a...'heroic-mood'. 😕
[The sensation of 'Heroism' is starts DEFINATLY in the toes.
Because it IS the farthest thought away from the brain!]

I signed up to harvest vegetables. 😐
Asparagus, to be specific.
White asparagus.

Foreign pickers were not allowed into the country,..
I thought I could,..would, 'save the day'.
Boy was I stupid.

It's the hardest work I've ever done.
I signed up for three months..
I COULD,..stop...right now(!)...
but,..
i'm prouder than I am stupid. 😑

We pick from 5 AM 'til 8 AM.
4 PM 'til 7 PM.
The fields are 8 miles down the road.
I bicycle there and back. No hills.
I'm dead.

White Asparagus is 'stabbed'.
The fields are lines of 'mounds',..that keep the Asparagus from going green.
We walk the rows, when we see a 'bud',
we stab in, at the bottom of the mound,
and pull the Asparagus,...'gently'...out.
With a trowel, in the other hand, we re-smoothen the mound.

It's this..'hunched' position that nails you(!).
We're constantly 'bent'.
I have to deliver 25 kilo's an hour.
Not a lot,..
but,..
the walking,
the hunching,
the wieght,..
GETTING UP(!) at 4 in the morning!
(i'd read somewhere that folks actually DID this(!),..
but didn't believe it!
....getting up at 4 in the morning...)

At first I thought:
Cool!
Get up early.
Earn some extra bread.
,...support the 'people'.
Practise in-between sessions...

,..after the morning 'session'
I'm laying underneath a wagon sawing wood! 😴

When I get home at nights,..
I sometimes don't even shower(!),..
I just plant myself! 😞

25 "homey's" started.
After a ONE WEEK(!),..
there were only two of us left(!).
The Germans re-opened the boarders(!..!),
for harvesters!

I'm the oldest guy here,..
and the tallest(!).
Both cases,..not helpfull. 😕

I've 'signed up' until the first week of June.
I'm going to finish,..
Then it'll be back to....'normal-acy'. 🙃

Enjoy your veggies,..
but go slow on the Asparagus(!).

You will be stronger in many ways when you finish harvesting. It is funny how the jobs most people don't want to do are now the most important. Here it is working in a meat packing plant.
