Nobody else will be doing this trick at your local Ring meeting. Never actually seen this done by another magician . . . Maybe there's a good reason.😀 |

He does it beautifully, as well.

I like this plot. It's fiendish.

A forgotten wonderful plot which should be revisited by the young generation !

I think it is a lovely trick:

Oh . . .
That's what it's supposed to look like! Pop Haydn, for the win. |

Thanks, Kent! Very kind of you to say. Glad you liked it. It is a great and underused plot. It is great for you to call attention to it. I have to admit some of your handling fooled me pretty badly. My routine is right out of the book. I had never seen Dingle's version, either. This thread is very interesting.

Pop,
Thanks. I've been trying to incorporate those displays into an all backs for a long time. I don't like having a card selected as a part of it. I'd still rather watch Dingle do any card trick rather than me though. |

I agree with you on that--having a card selected turns it into just another card trick. It's such a nice magical interlude, with a different magical effect, it seems a shame to make it just another way to find a card. I personally like the magician in trouble theme, which is funny and entertaining, and a natural reaction to the deck going "bad."
Larry Jennings used to complain, "Every card trick wants to be a transposition." He meant that it was important but hard to come up with original magical plots. Often when they do arise, someone "fixes them" by adding stuff that turns them into a commonplace. The idea of all backs is so refreshing and complete unto itself. Adding other effects to it ruins the whole thing in my opinion. You really want each trick in your act to be different in look and feel and effect. That way they complement each other and lead to an overall impression of magicality. Ten ways to discover a chosen card does not seem to the audience like ten different tricks. That whole section of Expert Card Technique is a gold mine, both with the Daly stuff and Vernon's. |

The stuff I do is nowhere near as polished as your magic. I like to think the stuff is different in feel and effect.

I contributed a Perverse Magic presentation to the All Backs effect on the Perverse Magic thread of the Genii Forum on January 7,2004 (and it appears in the book "Gerald Deutsch's Perverse Magic: The First Sixteen Years" on page 27).

Gerald,
I hunted it down and read through it. I like the concept of perverse magic. If you dig up any video, I'd love to see it. |

Always thought that the st*****r sv*****i deck leant itself perfectly to an 'all backs' routine. Looks good!
I still perform Sadowitz's "Beast With Two Backs" from The Crimp. As you say Kent and Pop, a relatively forgotten genre which makes a very magical interlude between other routines. All the best, Alan |

Looks like either "standard Svengali" or "stripped Svengali"

Nope, no Svengali ops.

You can get a great routine using a stripper deck or double back cards, but I like that Vernon's routine only uses an ordinary deck and can be used anytime during a performance.
