I'm watching "Masters of Illusion: Impossible Sscapes" and started wondering...
If there were a "Masters of Illusion: Tricks Are for Kids" special, which great children's magicians would you expect to be the performers? Other than maybe David Kaye and David Ginn, who else would be strong enough to be chosen to be on such a program? Mark Wilson or his son Greg. Any other contenders? I'd include Kyle Peron. Ken Scott would be a good choice since he's a leading library magic show entertainer. I love the kids tricks that Joe Eddie Fairchild performs. Brian Curry does school assemblies, as do Jay Mattioli and Bradley Fields. I know there are lots of magicians that kids enjoy watching--from David Copperfield to Jeff McBride to Criss Angel. But I'm thinking of magicians who primarily make their living doing kid shows--birthday parties, Boys/Girls Clubs, school shows... I doubt that the CW Network would have any real interest in such a special, but there are so many talented children's magicians out there, it would be nice to see them get some prime time publicity. ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

As long as they're not egotistic -I've seen a couple - doing what Daddy wanted. And one actually trained badly by ?? A review could be good to help - good ones . Just my opinion.

I'm sure some of the best performers are not guys who do dvd's, books, or lectures for other performers, so they, or their shows, are unknown to other performers.

SO true. I don't think the idea would be as well-received or accepted as the OP thought.
As someone who wrote the book on entertainers getting press, publicity, and media, why is it you think kids entertainers should get or deserve prime time publicity? |

If a kid's magician were ever to ask me that question, I'd answer: "The best kid's magician in the world is....YOU! You just have to believe it, then find it in yourself."
Otherwise, I'd say the Great Zucchini among those I know. Sad to say BTW, if there ever were a kid's-performer olympics, we'd get whomped by the UK regularly. The 3 most frequent gold-medal winners would be the US, the UK, and Canada. Singapore would be a longshot competitor, and Australia would be the underdog.
Everybody wants to beleive.....we just help them along.

I just don't know how anybody really knows who "the best" are, or how to compare the talent in different countries when we have only seen a small percentage of each others shows. Many of the kidshow "gurus" I've seen are great, but many are mediocre at best, or only somewhat above average. I've thought about doing a video or book myself. Some of the performers I've seen are very polished and professional (which is important) but they still aren't especially funny or entertaining (judging by audience reaction and what I think of them). On the other hand, there are some who are somewhat rough around the edges in terms of being polished and professional, but they really kill. We can all learn something from each other. A few of the best of the well known people I've seen live at Kidabra are Tommy James and Buster Balloon.
If you really want to learn, don't just learn from the Kidabra people, study improv comedy on a year round basis, maybe try stand-up comedy, study acting, watch and study movies and TV shows that your favorite current and old time comedy people are in, etc. Steve Martin has a course on comedy, I haven't seen it but I bet it's good. You can learn from jugglers and other variety entertainers also, even if you don't do the same stuff.

I agree and that is the biggest problem I have found with kids magicians. Many are content just performing tricks for kid audiences. That is so limiting. I have never understood this. In many ways, kids performers get to a point and then stop wanting to learn, grow or evolve. They'd rather just keep repeating the same thing over and over again.
I distinguish the difference between a magician, a performer, and an entertainer with all I work with. Today many don't aspire to evolve to the next or greater level. I also agree the worst thing kids magicians can do is watch other kids magicians. This too is so limiting and only creates a bunch of same copycats. Yes, learn for many different types of live entertainers as Dan mentioned and suggested. Same for the business side. Kid's magicians only see such a small, narrow and limiting view of their business. There is so much the never geat to or could evolve to. For most evolving means adding balloons, an animal, or face painting. There is so much more available than just this. Kids magicians, in my opinion, have the least business knowledge and abilities in all of live entertainemnt. There's so much more available than most ever realize. One of the easiest things to do is to become the top kids entertainer in a market. |

What I saw, was a Young Lady, floating(?) her younger Brother, The Brother was giggling and shaking (the Board) while the Sister was doing what looked like, she was playing a Jazz piano (lifting??.). On a Child Performers Program - supposedly taught by their Father,a Pro.(?) Magician- Egotistic?? They acted as if they were great, and new everything. Again, just an old mans (83) opinion.

Russo, Ok, I see the confusion. This thread is about magicians who perform for kids, not kids who perform.

Those are a few I can think of immediately, but I am sure there are plenty more fantastic performers I have forgotten or not yet seen.
