There is possibly a list already posted on this somewhere, but if so I’ve yet to find it, so grateful if someone could point me in the right direction.
Otherwise, here’s my question: what are some good ways (or your favorite ways) of revealing the identity of a spectator’s selected card? More specifically: when using an ungimmicked deck, no gaff cards, no duplicate cards, and no sleights? The scenario: a spectator freely selects any card (no force) from an ordinary fanned face-down deck. They look at it, memorize it, then return it to the deck. Already assume that you (the magician) can somehow easily find and identify their selection. Method could be quite simple, e.g. by using a one-way-backed deck, or an alternating red/black faces arranged deck, or relying upon a glimpsed “key” card. Regardless of method: what do you do next? Showmanship-wise, how would you now prefer to go about identifying and presenting to the spectator his selected card? You know where it is. But what exactly do you do with it? Remember: no sleights, dupes, or gaffs. Card to impossible location would seem to be ruled out (though If I’m wrong, I’m all ears). How to maximize fun, drama, and/or impact? Obviously just plucking the selection from the fan and saying “Here it is!” doesn’t do much, or have any build-up. So what would you suggest? Something like the old “take the spectator’s pulse as his hand passes over the spread” dodge is an example of the sort of easy reveal I’m looking for. So is the “Pick any number, I’ll turn over that exact number of cards, and the last one will be yours” gambit, where you intentionally go past their selected card (and they know it, thinking you’re about to fail), but then you go back and again turn over their already-turned-over card. So what other options exist? What might top those two? Any favorites or recommendations (ones that would be suitable for beginners)?

One of the easiest revelations (provided you have controlled/glimpsed the card and therefore know its identity) could be this ...
Let's say selection is 6 of clubs. Go through the pack saying something like "I think your card is a red one ... yes ... diamonds .. and it's not a number card ... yes I got it!" As you triumphantly say "got it!" you remove the actual chosen card and put it face down on the table. "For the first time. What is your card?" "The Six of Clubs" Stare at the card on the table for a few seconds (as Tamariz teaches don't try acting anything or you'll certainly overdo it!), then turn it over and say "I got it right then!" or something like that. It's a classic and works very well, especially with people that have never seen you perform. I seem to remember this revelation is often associated to the late Tom Mullica ... correct me if I'm wrong, please Mark |

If you have the element of time and will be seeing this person frequently, you could do something where you purposely get it wrong the first time and you act puzzled and say "Hmmm, I guess I need to work on this." Later that day, or the next day, or next month or whatever, you say, "I think I've cracked it. Ok concentrate on that card. Good, now, if you were elected mayor of any city in America, which city would it be?"
They say "Seattle" "Hmmm interesting" you say. "You're thinking of <insert correct card here>" Of course the question you ask doesn't matter, and you could play this for as long as you wanted by continuing to get the card wrong. If you had the perverse inclination, you could do it 51 times and keep getting it wrong on purpose, asking a different odd question and then thinking and then missing the card. This would be quite funny I think. |

Check out Daryl's Revelations DVD. Daryl's Birthday Revelation is sleightless.
You use the person's name to spell out the cards on the table and eliminate one by one using their name until one card remains. |

Lie detector - not on the list above, and can play very nice with the right rythm.
Could look like this: - Tell them they can lie or not, the way they like - Table a random card face up and use one of its features : « is your card it a number card? » - Approve or correct, then quickly table another card - Reveal as soon as they know you know: « is you card the ....? » |

Your question cannot be answered without more critical information. That is, any question of "best" is relative to setting, audience, expectations and routine flow.
You offer "How to maximize fun, drama, and/or impact?" as a magician. I am assuming that "experience of magic" is a given here as a guiding objective/expectation. no order or priority: a) what is your objective in performing this effect? Encourage them to show you a trick? Impress the wife of a big client? Kill as much time as possible? etc. b) what are the expectations of the spectator with regards to magic? Experience with general close up magic effects? Familiarity with card tricks? Are they a magician? etc. c) What are the expectations for you as a person? Do they know you are a magician famous with many magic venues? Is this person a girl friend? Spouse? Boss? What Are there any situational factors at risk here? d) What magic effect preceded this demonstration? What non-magic event occurred that may still be in memory. Is the spectator's attention focused on you or distracted? e) What event will follow your presentation? Another card trick? A different type of magic? This is a finale to many card tricks? A wedding proposal? Your kid leaving for college? etc. f) are there other persons observing this presentation? What are their expectations/experience? For example, did a booking agent just walk up and join the event? If one assumes that you (any performer) are trying to create an "experience of magic" as opposed to a skill demonstration or winning a club contest, then all of these questions and more create an opportunity often called "framing" of the effect. Thus, what you do to prepare, condition, train or empathize with this person is critical to the story they will tell after to a grandchild or person of influence for your future. Your choice of "reveal method" and even "why cards" and "why magic" must address what story you wish them to tell, and how you help mold that story. If their first words are going to be, "that guy just showed me a card trick" then you may have succeeded as an entertainer. but failed as a magician. Surely you desire something more like, "I just had one of the most amazing experiences in my life!" Perhaps a useful answer is that you must be prepared for several possible "reveals" and select the "best one" in the "here and now" of engagement with this particular spectator.
"the more one pretends at magic, the more awe and wonder will be found in real life." Arnold Furst
