Hello, I'm wondering if anyone knows the name of a certain effect, I've got my Tarbell 1-7 and suspect it's in there but just can't seem to find it...
Effect: Magician shakes out a silk and a second one appears hanging from it, the first is removed and the second is shaken out and a third silk appears, the second is put away and the third is shaken out revealing a fourth silk..etc...etc..etc.. I think I've seen Ali Bongo perform this on a video. Thanks |

Their are two methods to achieve this effect:
Marconick's.... which uses some gimmicked silks and is taught in his first book called 'Original Magic' and the one invented by Eric Lewis called the 'Diminishing Silk production' using ungimmicked silks. It is written up in a booklet by Harold Rice , called 'Capers with Colors'

This effect is sometimes called "Snap Silks".
A previous thread on the subject: https://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/view......forum=54 On that thread, I provide a link to buy the props and also an instructional DVD. Several other people mention certain books you can learn it from. ------ FYI, on the Laflin Magic website, they mention Marvyn Roy's name, as well as Eric Lewis's name. Quote:
The "Snap Silk" is a Marvyn Roy concept which was developed from a trick by Eric Lewis called "Diminishing Silks." - Donald P.S. Not trying to contradict Jonathan. Just adding information.
Donald Dunphy is a Victoria Magician, British Columbia, Canada.

Scott Alexander also teaches the Snap Silk production in the 2015 Penguin Holliday lecture. It’s buried towards the back at 2 hours 45 minutes into lecture. Shows how to do it without gimmicks silks. It’s become one of my favorite effects...always gets great reactions

Yes, the original was called the diminishing silks based on the thinking that you needed to slightly reduce the size of each successive production to reduce the size of the load. Marvyn always called it the "Snap Silks" and usually used the same sized silks leading to the "Hip Steal" of a chandelier in the electric act. This wonderful steal can be found on Marvyn & Carol's video from Joe Stevens.

I’ve used it as an opener and tip builder when busking. I’ll be “looking for my favorite red pocket square” as I shake silk and another pops out..and another...and another...
I the third silk has a card printed on it. I use it later in my act. I do reduced sizes of silks, as you learn method you’ll see why. Start with 18” silks, and by time I get to my red pocket square it’s a 9” silk. After I produced red silk, I tuck it in my pocket and state it’s time to begin the show. colorful silks do great job in catching the eye, and this trick is great way to demonstrate you’re a magician in pretty simple straightforward but impressive way.

Eric Lewis came up with the original idea. Marvyn and Carol made it famous. George Saterille does a very elegant version that is not as quite as energetic as Marvyn's since there is only one Mr. Electric. It is a great self contained quantity production of silk without apparatus. The original idea of the silks getting smaller and smaller with each production until it was a 6" square has been lost over time. The last person I saw do it that was was Ali Bongo.

Mr. Electric aka Marvin Roy, has a DVD through Stevens Magic, he explains his method for the snap silks he uses in his act. He uses 36" silks in his act with this silk production. He explains an addition he uses so the silks do not appear pre-maturely.

The diminishing silk trick is also in the book "More studies in mystery" by Eric Lewis
