I’ve always found Ed Marlo material quite daunting and have foolishly avoided a fair bit of it. I want to rectify that fact. I am looking for what you consider the Marlo gems. Since starting to explore Marlo’s work I have found two effects that I feel really stand out. One is ‘Think, Touch, Turn which I love. It has such great construction and magic moments. The other is one of his ‘spectator cuts the aces’ which seems to go over really well. What are other people’s favourites and why?

For a while I was killing in kids' shows with his routining of Homing Card. Admittedly I had to change the method on the final card, and you can say the plot belongs to Kaps and Hugard, but it still has the delightful odour of Marlo in there.

Marlo's Miracle Aces is my favorite, being able to dead cut to a card is impressive. Though when I perform it I only use tabled riffle shuffles for setup/shuffling.

I do Think, Touch,Turn and like it a lot. His trick Female is very strong. L&L publishing produced a whole set of DVDs featuring Bill Malone doing Marlo material. They are called Malone Meets Marlo. Bill Malone is highly skilled with cards and a great entertainer. You should check out those DVDs. L&L Publishing seem to be selling off a lot of their DVDs so call them up and see if they have any price reduction on the DVDs.

Check out "The Perfect Stop Trick" on page 46 of "Cardially Yours" (as of today, currently available and on sale from vanishinginc.com). This is a great book and a compilation of many of Marlo's early smaller manuscripts including the seminal "Marlo in Spades" and "The Cardician". You will find a ton of killer material that the normal human can perform!

I love the "Marlo Miracle Routine" (Marlo in spades Pages 13-16). If you can faro shuffle, it's about the best demonstration of skill with a deck of cards I've come across. It builds nicely, can be done with a brand new sealed deck. Has magical moments, but also demonstration of skill as a card technician. The only issue I had with it, was that after dealing out the perfect bridge hand, it ended with dealing the Gin Rumi hand. To me, that was an anti-climax. It has built up nicely to that point with estimating the number of cards cut, locating a spectators selected card, dealing out a winning poker hand, a winning bridge hand. The Rumi hand just seemed less impressive than the bridge deal.
I have modified the ending of the routine, with Darwin Ortiz "Deja Vue Poker" (Scams and Fantasies With Cards, p11-13). At the end of the bridge hand you are in the perfect position for this routine, and it utilizes farro shuffles as well, so you are still handling the deck in the same familiar by this point manner. My premise throughout the routine is my skill and ability with a deck to beat a card cheat, or a demonstration of what card cheats are capable of with years of practice. You can exactly "guess" the number of cards cut, you can locate cards in the deck. Not just one, but you can also track 5 cards throughout a shuffle to deal a winning poker hand. Although this is impressive, it's only tracking 5 cards, how about tracking a bridge hand, that is 14 cards. Then I move onto the Deja Vue Poker part, about tracking 4 hands of 5 card poker, that's 20 cards, and I then proceed with dealing out from a shuffled deck the spectators chosen poker hands, and myself the winning royal flush. |

His "Method Eight," published in "The Hierophant" (issue 1). It's an open prediction effect/method. Extremely clean. I've noticed that others have re-invented the same method over the years. For example Mike Powers, David Regal, and Raj Madhok re-invented essentially the same method. Powers' open prediction effect is called "Open Prediction 999" and it's found in his "Close-Up Variety Pack 2" (don't confuse this with "Open Prediction 999" found in Powers' "Power Plays" -- which is a completely different open prediction effect). Regal's open prediction effect is called "A Strong Feeling" and it's found in his "Close-Up and Personal." And Madhok's open prediction effect is called "Open Perception" and it's found in volume 2 of the "Talk About Tricks" DVD set by Joshua Jay.
