I apologize if this is not the correct place for this. As a new member I've tried searching for quite some time beforehand.
This is a basic question I cannot seem to find an answer to: What is the proper etiquette when performing someone else's trick on Facebook or Youtube? What I've seemed to gather is, if it's been put into a book by the creator, it's fair game to perform as long as it's performed well and you're not giving away the method. But I've read in a few books now that have asked that the author be contacted for permission first. So I ask, is my understanding correct and also, is it always best to ask permission first or would that just be pestering them? |

I mean, the best thing to do is perform original material and you'll never have to worry about that.
But that being said, you should easily be able to word any request to cover a more or less indefinite time frame. I know I've used wording like this in the past, "Hey there, I created a piece that turns out to be very similar to something you have published before. While this is independent creation I recognize this was yours first, and I'd like to possibly use it on a performance that will be televised. This is a description of my routine, and this is the description of the show I am trying out for. I am wondering if you are alright with this?" That lays out what I want to perform and how it will be used. The recipient acknowledged that it was very similar to their published work and stipulated that as long as I didn't perform the piece on TV in the creator's country (UK) he didn't mind me using the piece on the show I was trying out for (didn't get it, btw). Just lay it out clearly how you want to use the material and then respect the answer of the creator.

My opinion?
#1 Perform it flawlessly #2 Do not expose the method #3 Do not reveal the name the trick/routine is known for (lest people go and google it by name and possibly find its method) Thanks Mark |

Thank you both for the responses. As far as the performing original material part. I'm not quite there yet. I'm a year into learning but I'm starting to put things together.
I've just read a lot of great books in the last year and they talk about performing the tricks and even give the scripts you should use when performing them and I just didn't know if those "book tricks" are just to be used when performing for friends or if they were ok in public. I've been practicing many of these effects and was eager to show someone besides my wife and kids. |

Also, only a few of them have mentioned getting permission first. I understand what should be done in those cases and I appreciate the example WitchDocChris of how to go about reaching out.
But it's this mention that made me question if that is always the proper etiquette to reach out first or if it's only needed when they request that you do it first. I assume mlippo is referring to the cases where it's not mentioned? |

Think of those scripts as examples, not the way you "should" perform them. But if the creator isn't explicitly requesting contact before using said material, it is fair game.
Though it is considered polite to reach out whenever possible just to be sure. Also this is a good way to make friends and establish yourself in the community.
