Nicknamed "The Snake", just released by Racherbaumer from LYBRARY.COM .learn this and give the Elmsley Count a rest,Beautiful when properly executed...
God's grace rocks! It makes a good cups and balls routine look pretty boring in comparison.

I recently acquired this (in book form) from a vintage magic book dealer. What a fabulous publication! I always wanted to add the Ascanio Spread to my repertoire, and the material in this book is superb!

Marlo taught it to Racherbaumer,in the early 70's he did it for me.I gave it to Grippo in Vegas in '74...don't know where/if it's in print or the original title.it's the way with things passed down...

The very first effect I did that used this was Paul Harris’ Reset. Great move that is so incredibly deceptive and useful. Definitely has different utility than Ghost Count though. In some instances, they are interchangeable but definitely not always. Like in Twisting the Aces.

It is good for a continuing twisting effect.

If you are showing your audience 4 cards, how would you naturally do it? just spread them out. Both this and the Ghost Count are flawed. People can very easily see 4 cards if you just fan them.

I mean, who puts balls between their fingers in real life? Who walks around with silver dollars in little purses. The point is to learn the count as well as you can and make it as normal-looking as you can.

Be sure to check out Bill Wisch's version of "Turnover Aces" utilizing the Ascanio Spread in this vintage video from December 1987 at the Magic Castle (Routine starts at 12:07). Hope you enjoy!

So just spread them out. The audience can count to four. It's inherently a bad move. So you don't speak for me when you say "we". I agree with the OP. Quote:

Anything other than just spreading them out with one hand looks weird. To me. If you think all these weird counts look normal to a layperson, great. Carry on. |

And have you ever watched how spectators handle cards? If I handled cards like that, they would be really suspicious. Sometimes I show 4 cards using an Ascanio-like spread. I might even hand the cards out for inspection. As a non-pro hobbiest, my spectators (friends and family) do not hesitate to call things out when they see something fishy. But they have yet to call me out on these sorts of card displays. David M. |
