Hi all,
Just started zoom shows. And want to fit in the Magic Square Routine. Any ideas on how to get the number secretly is welcome. Thanks in advance. Regards Nbl |

There are magic square routines that don't require knowing a secret number. Chuck Hickok's wonderful Diagonal Square for example or some of Doug Dyment's work. Variants of my effect Subliminal Square might also be adaptable though I am not that experienced with Zoom.

I'll second getting Bill's Subliminal Square book. You'll get lots of various ideas and presentation and I'm sure you'll find one that fits with a Zoom video.

No need really to get a secret number. Chuck and bills squares are excellent.

This release by Mr. Dyment is the best for building custom magic squares in action: https://www.deceptionary.com/idiopraxis.html
Mindsights is the best for making rapid magic squares, especially if you can get the number secretly. For either approach, if you use Banachek’s Reversal for example, you only need a finite (less than 10) number of outs |

I let the participant take three dice, roll them a couple of times and then stack them on top of each other, out of sight for me. Then I ask to point the camera to the stack for 1 second. And by the time they have added up all the values on all the visible sides of the dice, my square is filled in. And of course everything adds up to the random number that they created.

Point your camera at the stack for 1 second and then turn it away again. Now add up the values of all of the visible faces. (10 faces, 3 on each side of the stack + the one on top) This should take you some time to do. Meanwhile I create a magic square and I am done before you added up all of the values. I explain what I am doing as doing some calculations and visualisations to get to the sum. Even though I only had a one second look at one side of the stacked dice. I use Doug Dyment's magic square. All of the values except for the 4 key cells are written in pencil and all I need to do is write them in Sharpie. I know you know the method for instantly knowing the sum of all of the visible faces on the dice but a layman doesn't. Give it a try. If you don't get a good reaction, then don't do it again. But if you do get a good reaction, send me a thank you note. ;-) This is of course not a mind reading demonstration. It's more of a lighting fast calculation and memory demo.

I don't understand how you get (10 faces)? Surely there are 13 visible faces.

He did the math wrong, no biggie. The basic understanding is still the same. I wouldn't do it myself, seems like a hugely contrived process, but it's pretty simple.
Instead, let them roll 2 dice, free roll, and add the numbers showing. You've got an 11 o** i****. Even better, in my opinion, is to have them roll the die, then create a the biggest 2 digit number out of their roll that they can. So if they rolled a 2 and a 5, it would have to be 52. Have o**** for each, and do the easiest s**** ever. Would require 21 o*** I also wouldn't do that effect. I guess I just really don't like dice I guess. |

I have absolutely no idea what any of that means.

If you're happy with a demonstration of quick calcs rather than mind reading I've used John Archer's version from his penguin lecture.
Just as a couple of thoughts... try 37 force, you could even reveal at the end of the show that you knew they would choose 37 or a calculation to get them to arrive at specfic number and make them feel it was truly random (think of a 2 digit number, add both numbers together, multiple by... etc.) once you arrive at your key number you can get them to add/subtract/multiply by whatever you want to get to your force number. |
