Hey Café members,
Hope everyone is well and keeping safe. I'm looking for a good one coin vanish that I can do after coins across (Coin One & Roth's Coins Across). I currently do the Spider Vanish but would like to do another vanish where I end clean. Can anyone recommend a good one coin vanish and the source? Thanks! Roberto

Hi Roberto. When I read your post it was a bit like being in class when someone else puts their hand up and asks a question that you also would really like to ask
I'm also working on my s***l 'coins across' pretty much as per DR's classic routine but have been playing around with the final vanish. I'd love to get the thoughts of some experienced coin guys on the different subtleties and psychology on dealing with the final coin (or s***l). Thanks Steve |

Any one coin vanish that fits your natural movement will be just fine. I use the R.O.P.S. move since it allows you to steal a coin out of the hand without needing to do a false transfer. As for ending clean, many ways. Sleeving, lapping, topit, matting, to name a few.
S.E.M. (The Sun, the Moon, and the Earth) is a sun and moon routine unlike any other. Limited to 100 sets, here is the promo:

You seem to be focusing on learning a new technique. I agree with stevie that the key should be "subtleties and psychology"
that can be used to enhanced many techniques you may have already mastered. Consider: 1) the fact that the routine has ended will cause some to attempt to rewind the actions or reconstruct the entire routine. That is, earlier vanishes or transportations may have properly had the observers "caught up in the flow of things" with a juggling of anticipation/surprise and acquitments serving as disconnects. So, the 'final vanish" is also a final of the expectations of magic to occur. It is wise for this final event to seem part of the entire routine and rarely "something different" for punctuation. a) what was the objective of this routine? Th ending to a long show? A prelude to something greater to occur? A skill demonstration rather than "must be magic?" b) did a vanish occur earlier in the routine? If not, why now? Is this vanish an acceptable ending to the routine. For example, if the routine starts with the production of a coin then the final vanish is appropriate/expected. If you borrowed the coin, then no. Would making the coin become invisible be preferable? etc. c) what Patterns of Performance have been established by earlier moves upon which you can build psychological ploys? 2) what acquitments have been used previously? For example, if after each earlier vanish you have shown the placing hand to be empty by casually touching your glasses, then it will seem strange is that is not repeated. Also, that move can be used to create a false expectation. What finger/hand positions have trained the observers as to what is "normal" for you and the handling of coins? 3) what psychological ploys have already been used in this routine? Most common are "Persistence of Vision, Continuity Bias, Inattention of Vision, False Expectation, Misdirection (different from Directed Focus), and Predictive Vision. I suggest NOT using a new one in this final vanish, but to repeat of take advantage of one already proved thought that may apply: "The easiest coin to vanish is one that never was." unkown "Never try and convince a spectator the coin is in a specific place. Understand where they know it to be and follow." Vinny Marini "Suspicion cannot be killed after the fact, only minimized. Best to have it never evolve at all." Harry Shilling therefore (advice) assuming that a vanish is appropriate, you repeat some previously vanishing action with an additional placement back in the original hand (right). Eye focus, foot placement and body tensing will alert observers that something momentous is about to occur. The left hand is completely empty and pointing or wave. the right hand opens slowly to reveal the coin to be gone. They key is that when the anticipation of the vanish begins the coin is already gone. The final placement of the coin is totally psychological, but "visible" because of the Ploys involved. You are clean because both hands are empty before the sequence begins. In steps, assuming yo9u have previously executed a ROV type Vanish to the left hand or a Basic Vanish (better). The coin in the right fingers is visible dropped into the left hand. The right hand is shown to be empty using previously established hand movements but enhanced as necessary. There must be no doubt that this hand is completely empty. the coin is ditched on the left side by any means. The 'coin' is now dropped into the right hand/fist, relying on Predictive Vision and Continuity Bias. The observers will see and remember the coin dropping into the waiting hand. The left hand is shown to be completely empty (Preemptive Doubt and Inference). The acting can be overdone as all focus moves to the left hand known to hold the coin. The actual method of reveal is base don what has occurred before. That is seen/remembered is both hands open and empty with no weird moves. Note: I have transferred a psychological coin back and forth several times - each actually enhancing the "knowledge" of the observer as to where the coin is while providing distance form the actual sleight. A lot of practiced acting is required as to hold this phantom coin (check Al Schneider's book).

I use the Pumpkin Seed Vanish here (found in the sleeving section of Bobos).
If you're interested, pm me for the actual procedure and subtleties I use for the vanish, in the context of this routine. Jim |

Joshua Jay does a great vanish with one coin using a watch. He uses this method in triad coins. Im not sure who created this vanish?

I have to agree with something Eric Jones once said on this forum a decade ago or so now, that basically “The Parallel Sleeve Vanish” is one of the most devilishly deceptive and clever vanishes of a coin that I have ever seen, still to this day, and I have played with my fair share of vanishes during my journey.
Man, it is just a beautiful thing to behold, as magically put as can be....Now you see it, now you don’t. WOW! 😁

Thanks for all of the suggestions/videos, great stuff. I should've been more clear in my post. What I'm actually looking for is a good ditching method so that I can end clean. I'm not interested in sleeving or lapping, nothing wrong with those methods it's just that I don't always wear a jacket and rarely do magic sitting down. Right now I'm just working on ditching the shell after doing a French Drop and reaching forward with the "taking" hand as my dirty hand drops to my side and ditches in my trouser pocket. I do a slight turn of my body as I come forward with my "take" hand. I'm sure this is an old method. Obviously, this can't be done surrounded. I'm just looking for other methods of ditching the last coin. Many thanks!

Check out contributor Bill Wisch's technique in Rubinstein Coin Magic, as well as a great technique taught in Part 1, used to get rid of the last coin in this routine:

You don't really need a complete vanish at the end of that routine. You can do the spider vanish or something similar,...
Reveal the last coin has travelled, and pick up the coins and quietly add the palmed shell to one of the coins. Very easy to do and the coins will be "talking" anyways. count the coins. Next, drop the coins in a spec's hand or on a table , palming the shell. Step back, put your hands in your pockets casually. Or you can just put the coins in your pocket after recounting them or displaying them. If you do this casually, nobody will suspect anything and if they ask to see the coins, you have an out. Spectators just don't suspect you are palming a sh-- when you just showed the correct number of coins again. |

There is a "DeepDrop" Vanish. The coin is propelled back to be caught between the elbow and side of Stomach.
Can be either part of a toss to the hand the overshoots or a flick off of the palm during an apparent placement. The power comes from being able to show the placing hand completely empty before the reveal. Of course, you must be able to act as if to coin is held until the reveal (see Al Schneider writings) It helps if you make several other moves with the elbow touching your side (InTouch). There are many advantages to operating from this posture, including using bogy swings rather than arm movements Later on you can retrieve the coin in a variety of ways.

What I think most of you have missed is that he is asking for a complete vanish for a shell, for the last coin in coins across. I don't think any of the ideas mentioned will consistently work. With a sh=== you can't take the risk of missing a sleeve, etc. I believe it is reasonable to suggest that a vanish for a sh=-- is different from a total coin vanish. Just saying.

Well, CM, in his first post there was no mention of a shell, just an ending for actions a coins cross routine. (not all of which use a shell)
I did not take his suggested favorite routines to limit approach, but to prompt thinking. Later he said he was "working on" using a method of ditching the a shell. So, I am not sure anyone has "missed" anything in making suggestions of "magicians helping magicians." The title is "One Coin Vanish." Guess missed the 'shell" part here also. Silly me thought he might be looking for a different vanish usable in many settings. But, it is certainly true that handling a shell is different from a complete coin or stack or combination coin or small coin or ... One explores different methods so that accommodations can be made for the uniqueness of a prop or its limitations, or to decide is a particular routine is appropriate for setting, audience, dress or prop. I appreciate the many suggestions prompted by this inquiry. Glad I didn't miss any. But, then he ends the revised explanation with, "I'm just looking for other methods of ditching the last coin." Shell? Coin? Both? Confusion? Searching? If the focus of this post is now to be limited to ditching an item the audience does not even know exists, then perhaps no use of the words "vanish" is appropriate since that implied the observer perceives that something solid no longer exists. To that end, your suggestion above is valuable as to just palming away the shell for a later ditch by any method. You are not vanishing the shell at all since it does not exist for the audience. But, so will the psychological based approach I described in my first post. It will work with any object that can be held in a fist. Why would you "think this will not consistently work?" In your example of using 'count verification' to mask the presence of the shell you are using a psychological ploy (Inference and Continuity Bias and Directed Focus - possibly Innattention of Vision) Why do you then discount other possibilities as "not consistent?"
