Hello all!
I just recently purchased a slightly used Morgan Unexpanded Shell set. The set looks great however, I'm noticing that the shell "talks" when I have a coin nested. I'm working on a routine that involves a coin roll-to-finger palm and when I do the coin roll with the nested shell, I can hear the coin slightly rattle. Can anyone recommend a fix for this? Many thanks! Roberto

Sounds like the fit is a bit loose. Is the shell’s rim snug all the way around each nested coin, or is it perhaps a bit out of round? If the latter, have you tried rolling the shell (with a coin nested in it) upon its rim on a hard surface, to see if it can be pushed inward a bit more for a better, more snug fit?

You could put a teflon disc inside the shell. I put one layer of optically clear teflon tape I have in all of my shells to reduce talking. Even some thin packing tape might help in a pinch.

I've been experimenting with mousetape as it's a lot thinner than teflon discs (at least in the UK) which means coverage of the [ over the regular coins is compromised less (almost zero as it is so thin). A little bit of trial and error cutting around an insert coin with a sharp craft knife will yield perfect results. Same coverage, but snugger and no 'talk'. Good luck 👍

Try some different Morgan dollars; diameters and vary due to erosion over time.

If it’s an unexpanded shell set, as he mentioned, then he can’t very well try other (regular) Morgan dollars....

Hi Nev. The teflon discs are also good so I guess it's just personal preference. If you did want to try the tape, this is the place to get it:-
http://mousetape.com/ It ships from the USA but only takes a few days to arrive and is pretty cheap. BW Steve |

Tango makes Teflon circles that work great.
You can find them on line. They retail for about $10. https://www.penguinmagic.com/p/11825 TC |

Hey guys,
Thanks for the great tips. I'm going to try both the teflon discs and mouse tape and see which one works best. Hopefully, that will do the job. Thanks again! Roberto

Teflon or mouse tape would help if the nested coin rattles up and down. Snugging up the rim helps if it’s side to side, instead of up and down. One is an issue of depth, the other of diameter.

Karnak,
Okay so now, the shell does not de-nest the way it's supposed to. I think I rolled the nested shell a little too firm. Not de-nesting is worse than the slight rattling. I should've just waited to get the teflon discs. Now I need to open up the shell mouth slightly so that the coins can easily de-nest. Sigh! Roberto

Sounds like it's now a bit too tight, or slightly out of round inwardly (instead of outwardly, as when it was loose).
To loosen it, have you tried the old trick of laying a silk over the mouth-up shell, then nesting a coin into the shell (with the silk still in between them)? Then you pull or stretch the silk taut, to pop out the coin. This often successfully and gently widens a too-tight shell. Another method is to take a plastic Bic lighter, the kind with a somewhat rounded body or curved sides, hold its bottom against the mouth-up shell perpendicular to it with the lighter's curved body up against the curved inner rim of the shell, and slowly work your way around the inner perimeter, gently and evenly pushing the rim outward just a bit.

Roberto, this is usually easy to solve.
Another way is to first closely examine the rim of the shell to see if a section is slightly deformed inwards. If it is, nest the insert coin in the shell and hold both with shell on the bottom. Your index and main finger of each hand below (touching the shell) and both thumbs on top (touching insert coin). The portion of deformed rim should be furthest away from you (12 o clock). Now use your thumbs to push the insert coin in the direction of the deformation. Go steady at first!! If no deformation can be seen, the same method can work but you would have to progressively rotate the insert coin as you 'push out' the rim of the shell carefully and gradually. Good luck |

Stevie,
It's funny because that's exactly what I was trying to do when I realized that I may have closed the mouth of the shell a little too much by rolling it on a hard surface with a coin nested. I wasn't sure if it would work, I don't think it helped much. I'll keep working on it. The reason I did the coin rolling on a hard surface to begin with was that the shell was slightly rattling, making a "tin" noise, especially when doing coin rolls with a nested shell coin. Thanks!! Roberto
