THE TRICK: http://www.penguinmagic.com/product.php?ID=410
THE NUTSHELL: Great routine that I use a lot. THE REVIEW: The Standup Monte was my first Monte-style trick. I learned it even before I did the Two Card Monte and have been very happy with it in my arsenal since I started doing magic. When I first learned it, it was automatically leading my absolute arsenal. After getting the Ultimate 3 Card Monte and the Color Monte, it is no longer at that height, but I still consider it one of the best routines I’ve got. The pros: As I just said, the routine. This is speedbag magic that devastates the spectators. The constant followup effect keeps the trick going, the astonishment building, and leaving the routine with total amazing. The element of surprise and confusion has the spectator seeing what’s going on, but unable to keep track of it. The element of speed doesn’t offer the spectator any time to be forming theories of how the effect is done, and, when its over, its too late for them to do so. It is easy to perform, taking about a half hour to learn the routine, an hour to master it. As always, the trick comes with a few cons. First of all, the cards aren’t examinable, however, unlike so many tricks, that rarely is a problem for me. There aren’t too many requests to have the cards examined. Second: no matter how good you are at it, some people can just see it. There are a lot of observant people who have the eyes to see something not quite right with the cards, and the brains to figure out what the gaff is. A personal con for me was that I did not like the cards, so I remade it (yes, it’s easy to make if you know the simple secret) using Jokers and the Ace of Hearts. Perhaps this is obsessive, but I find these cards much more visually appealing to the spectators. I don’t have this in my regular routine, as I do some of the other monte effects, but it plays the closing role in my Monte Routine. Therefore, I suppose it is in my absolute arsenal. With high recommendations, I give this fast-paced, affordable packet trick a solid 7.5. |

I looked at the demo for this. My question: why the hey is it called Stand-Up Monte, seeing as how you need a table and all? I don't think a spectator would have to be very observant to spot the DB card in use, so this one is,..eh,..not so good.
For a real stand up Monte, try Wild Monte on Michael Weber's Steven's Emporium tape. You can make it yourself with 4 regular cards and a piece of double stick tape (but you're not making a DB card), plus you get several other tricks on there as well. Randwill |

By far the standup monte is my favorite opener at all of my restaurants. It's visual, and after thousands of performances over the past few years, I have never once been caught or exposed.
A table is not needed, you use the spectators hand. In fact, only at the beginning do you even need to set a card down. I've changed the patter and some of the moves to fit my style. Of all of the gimmicked monte's I perform, this has the most impact for me. In fact I keep a spare set in my wallet for "emergencies" Highly recommended. |
