I have observed that the finer points of the manicurist's art rather rarely crop up for discussion on the Magic Cafe. In an effort to rectify this sad omission, I would like to solicit the advice of any mentalist-manicurists who might happen to be visiting...
Here's the problem: I have a fine crack in the thumbnail of my right hand. I've had it for years and it's not going away. This wouldn't be a major problem apart from the fact that it does make it difficult to use a swami gimmick. Every time I grow my nail long enough to fit the gimmick, the nail cracks. So, what can I do to strengthen the nail or (even better) fix that crack for once and all? If I need to wear varnish of some kind, that's fine by me. Maybe I'll end up with hands that look as though they are on loan from Joan Collins - well, heck! that might not be so bad - I bet you could hide a lot under those fingernails! best wishes Huw |

Switch to a boon or band writer.

Huw,
Philemon is right and if by now you have bought your copy of "13 Steps" you'll see that there are many other different shaped NWs. Regards, Eric

In this country (USA) you find Nail shops at almost every shopping mall and in almost every town of any size. Simply go to one and have them bond a nail to yours. They will trim it to any length. Take your NW with you and they will custom build a nail that works perfectly (until yours grows out a bit). Then plan to return to the shop every two weeks for maintenance of the nail over time your nail will have been protected enough for the crack to grow out.
I know of a close-up magician that has all of his (yes HIS) nails done because he used to chew on them and they are very small and misshapen. Just an idea.

It seems to me that you could cover the crack with clear nail polish. This would add some strength to the nail and at least allow you to wear the nail writer. As for how to fix the nail, I would try a doctor.

As Blurr said, check with a doctor. You probably are lacking in protein.
For immediate results, try those mentioned and get in touch with Vernet and see if they can make a NT. Just teasin'....hope you solve your problem, Jerry .. |

Find a nice beautician and explain your nail troubles, I'm sure they'll come up with a lot of options for you.
Try the Boon. I did and haven't gone back to a C writer. Or perhaps a TT version might suit you? Failing that, there is the Bandwriter... Lots of options. But as the others have mentioned, you may need to have a closer look at your diet. Sn!per |

Lots of options. But as the others have mentioned, you may need to have a closer look at your diet. It's purely physical damage. All my other nails are fine. I hit the thumbnail awkwardly one time and it caused a very tiny, almost invisible, fracture which has failed to 'grow out'. It's something I wouldn't even notice were it not for the NW problem. I think I've found some useful information on this site for guitarists, however... http://www.angelfire.com/music2/guitarglen/nail.htm best wishes Huw |

Reading down the posts, I was about to suggest the guitarists' approach, which I remember using before a performance some years ago. I never found that superglue on its own works well, but the 'layers of tissue & varnish' approach seems to do the trick, albeit short-term.
That said, you're dealing with a different pressure here. (Classical) Guitarists' nails take pressure on the tip almost directly back down the line of growth of the nail. With a NW, there's more of a 'flexing' pressure on the nail, so you may need so many layers you can't get the NW on in the first place! |
