I picked up some billiard balls at a second hand shop a while ago, they fit perfectly in my Rings-n-Things Paul Fox cups, and I love the look of them. However I struggle with them "speaking" either when I load them into the cup or when I put the loaded cup on the table. I'm looking for some solutions to this. It's already been suggested I look into Paul Gertner's work, and I intend to, but in the interest of a "no stone left un-turned" approach I was wondering if anyone new of someone manufacturing full size rubber billiard balls? I've done some looking but so far not found any.

I do a chop cup routine with three billiard balls as the final loads. No talking.

When loading something like this it is because the ball strikes suddenly against the cup; obviously. Try holding the ball in a way that you can almost spin it slightly as you load it by using your fingertips. This will create less blunt force in one spot and cause the ball to talk less. I wish I could give you more specifics but it just a "knack" thing really. I can say this though if you are doing it even closely to correct you will almost be dragging your fingers across the lip of the cup and the ball will rotate slightly over your fingertips. The ball will only roll while in contact with your finger tips and only a tiny bit at that.

Thanks for the advice Chuck, I'll give that some practice and see what I can do with it.

There are some other techniques for this. They do require a lot of practice and/or misdirection.

However, this area is not the place to reveal secrets. When you have 50 posts, "The Secret Sessions" will become available to you.

Or you can send me an e-mail.

It is fun, for me at least to try to make odd/new things work.

I suggest that you keep looking for the magician that has already solved the problem, and in the meantime try to solve it yourself.

Then maybe when you get into the secret sessions you'll have a method that hasn't been published.

My addition to the conversation is this: sound is relative.
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.
