Hey guys. I was just wondering if starting illusions at a younger age is a good idea. I currently perform children's parties, but I've always loved illusions. Anything you guys would reccommend I save money to purchase? I'm thinking about starting out with Andrew Mayne's compact illusion series. Anybody have any of these? Any suggestions/comments? Thanks!

Hi Daniel.
This question comes up frequently here on the board. A lot of people will tell you that you should start out with simple little effects that are cheap to build like the victory carton illusions and such. This is all fine and well, but my response is that you should only do illusions if you're going to do them right. When people see an illusion show they expect to see a bit of razzle dazzle and the victory cartons just don't cut it. The good thing is, it's not that hard to do some stunning illusions that the big boys do, on a small budget! Many would agree with me when I recommend the Metamorphosis - a sub trunk is easy and inexpensive to build, and you can build it to look however you want! The Floating Rose (Kevin James) is one of the most stunning illusions ever devised and costs pennies. As long as you're willing to invest the time, and you have a willing assistant and crew member, you can go a long way on a little money. Age isn't a factor - it's more the time and energy you have to put into it. Andrew Mayne is certainly a good place to start. Just make sure that if you do it, you do it right! --Jack http://www.jack-stephens.com |

Read a lot mate: Gary Darwin's books and Randwoodbury's books are good ones too.
