I have just heard that my longtime friend John Mendoza has died after a long period of ill health. He was Magic Café's own Runawayjag,
There is little to say other than the past four or five months were particularly rough on him and his family. He'll always be remembered for his brilliant Cups and Balls routine (a first done with the then new Combo cups put out by Morrissey Magic in Canada). I will always remember the help, advice, tips, and wisdom he shared with me. Rest In Peace my friend. You will be missed.
The artist formally known as Mumblepeas!

Sad to hear. The last email he sent out didn't seem like he was very well and he was aware he didn't have long.

I am so sorry to hear this news. I long admired and trusted John as a most respected dealer of antiquarian magic. He was always willing to answer complicated questions about old props and provide performance tips and hints. His special and unique presentational subtleties were always appreciated. One of a kind for sure.

I did some magic business with him last summer. He was very gracious and helpful with a question I had pertaining to a sophisticated piece of magic. It was a pleasure knowing him even if it was only online. R.I.P. good sir.

I remember one of his last emails. He mentioned how he had to have his beloved cat euthanized and how much she had meant to him. And now he is gone, too. It's so sad. RIP, John.

I knew John through some trheads and PMs. He was kind and helpful to me. The quality of his magic leaves no doubts. Another star has reached the Greats of the past. R.I.P. John. Condolences to the family.

I remember meeting him at the Eagle Magic Store in Minneapolis in the late 70's. I bought his "Book of John" and always loved his computer deck trick. At the store he was playing with some billiard balls and I was awestruck at his sleight of hand ability! Smooth as silk. Truly a gifted close up performer. He will be missed!

Although I only saw him on dvd, I learned a lot from his magic presentation...he disarmed his audience with humor and charm. My favorite is his chop cup routine; and getting the audience to gasp and laugh at the same time. Condolences to friends and family. Lynn

I knew John well. He was a hero of mine in the field of performing and teaching. He had the knack of being able to streamline an existing effect to not only simplify it, but also enhance its entertainment value. Check out his "Routined Poker Mental" for an example of taking a simple trick (he got the idea from a child's magic book) and turning it into a finale blockbuster that destroyed lay audiences and magicians alike. I saw him perform many times and he always left his audiences thoroughly entertained and bewildered. His "Book of John" has to be one of the few magic books in existence with all "A" material. Every effect in it actually came from his working sets. And John's expertise and knowledge of magical prop history was amazing! He was often blunt, but very truthful and accurate. Doug Henning called his review column "the most honest and frank review sheet ever published in the magic trade." He was a true great in the performing field. I will miss him greatly.

This is sad news that I'm only just finding out about. I earned a living from doing 'formal close-up' style magic in the mid 1980's and the vast majority of the magic I performed came from seeing his lecture at the `Martin Breeze day of magic in (I think) 1981. I bought 'The Book of John and "John:Verse 2" and they were my go to books for material.
I contacted John a little while back because I hadn't got to see him perform any of his coin routines and I was hoping there might be a recording of them somewhere. He said he thought someone might have a VHS tape of him performing the coin stuff but he later got back to me to say it seemed to have been lost. It would be a terrible shame if there really is no record of John performing his coin routines and that they are lost to the world of magic forever. They leap off the page as spectacular pieces of theatre and if they play anything like his other material in the Book of John they'll be a marvellous treat to see.

I didn't know John passed (I'm very late but still want to say something about John)
First I'm so sorry to hear this so late, we had lots of great conversations. John was always extremely helpful and very kind. He also helped me with my Poker Machine, one of the most impossible machines ever made. What this thing can do is unbelievable (no phone or app can compare, and it still kills when I show the amazing power of this secret machine Casino's hate!) and John brought it to the next level. RIP dear John... |

John's DVDs are among my favorites, and I will never forget the moment I received my Mendoza combo cups in the mail from Rings-N-Things. They were my first professional working set. Truly a legend!
