My order is in and I'll give a review when it arrives. Mail to Canada has been very, very slow - orders from Europe or Asia are taking over two months. Hopefully from the US will be a bit quicker.

I'm surprised with the whole country having to wear masks that this post lies pretty much dormant. Anyone get this and want to give a review?

I get a 404 error on his site.

My one arrived today - took about 6 weeks to Canada which is actually pretty good at the moment - mail is very slow. I like it a lot. Very easy to do and you have to practice a bit to make sure that everything lines up perfectly. I can do it perfectly in front of a mirror and we will have to see how I do when I go out grocery shopping and for a coffee tomorrow. I'll still do a bit more practicing. In the instructions you get 3 different ways of doing the colour change. Turning around, or facing the spectator two handed or one handed. He says that one handed is the most difficult but I find that one very easy and very visual. The only supplier was O'Brien Magic and he doesn't seem to list it anymore. Guess I was luck to get my hands on one.

I rarely post negative reviews preferring to concentrate on products with which I have had positive results. But with Halloween shows going forward in some areas and some magicians taking a look at this, I would feel remiss in not sharing my experience.
Unfortunately, for me this was one of the most disappointing purchases in the last decade. I love the concept and design, but the execution on the one I received renders it unworkable. It simply can't be performed without exposure. It does not match what is in the trailer in terms of fit and finish. It is completely missing two key elements that the originator said in the instructions are important to disguise the gimmick. The locking mechanism is also far too weak. It is imposible to even slightly move my head without it failing and exposing the mechanisation. The solution offered is not tenable. And worse of all, when in the white color (this one is white and red) the left half looks a completely different shade than the right half. Each element; cloth, stitching, locking pieces, and safety need to be of higher quality to make it work. You will need to build one from scratch if you want it to be anything like in the video. Net, it is a very good idea sabotaged by an abysmal build. |

There must be differences in quality control - mine works perfectly. Mine goes from green to red and I have had no problem with the locking mechanism. I performed it 4 times today with no problems. The first two times were for people who knew I do magic and so they were expecting something to happen -still enjoyed it. The next two spectators were totally taken by surprise and I got really good reactions.

Update. Ed was kind enough to exchange photos/videos with me over PM (to avoid exposure).
His is complete and looks just like the trailer and instructional videos. And his handling looks great. Mine is missing key features to make it work and even appears to be a different shape. They are day and night. I am going to reach out to O'Brien Magic about an exchange. I will post an update here with the response. Thanks Ed! |

Michael O'Brien got back to me within minutes of my email and is sending a replacement out. You don't see that level of customer service very often nowadays.
My thinking now is that this was a limited issue. So please take Ed's experience as more representative of the trick itself and my experience as representative of O'Brien Magic's willingness to resolve issues. |

So, the Color Changing Face Mask by Joseph Varner is no longer available? It's not on any site...

Long story short, Joseph sent out a ton of defective product (or in some cases never sent product at all) and a bunch of customers asked for a refund. I refunded them out of my own pocket because Joseph refused to pay me back money he owed for the masks. Then blocked me. So he is no longer doing business with me anymore. You can purchase from him directly if you like but just know he has a pretty bad track record on fulfilling orders and CS.

Thanks for taking care of my issue so quickly, Michael. I really appreciate your timely email communication explaining the issue. While it is disappointing not to receive a working unit, you did everything that a quality retailer should. I am sorry that you took a financial hit trying to bring innovative magic to us.

What a great concept though! I hope some reputable Magic person picks up on this! I had cash ready...
