I bought this deck for about $11.00 on etsy. I thought it was a 1960s era deck but much to my surprise it is a 1944 deck!
The deck is in very good condition but doesn't fan at all. Must be the age. I thought about using zinc sterate to "restore" the fanning but now have second thoughts! Since it such a good looking antique deck I surely won't want to use it performance. And if it just a collectable deck then there is no reason for it to fan except to be able to occasionally display the fronts and backs. Would appreciate advice from expert collectors! Thanks! Here are some photos. The war bonds ad card was a pleasant surprise! Phil Click here to view attached image. |

I just saw this thread. When I was first learning magic as a young kid, a friend of mine had a partial pack of Bicycle Fan Back playing cards. This was in the 1970s and he told me they were given to him by his grandmother. She told him she'd had them for decades, so they were probably similar era to the ones you posted. There was no box though and a few cards were missing. I fell in love with that back design because of those cards. Later, when I was in high school, I had the opportunity to purchase a brick of them. The USPCC had just re-introduced them. I still have a few unopened packs.
Funny how worked up we can get when it comes to playing cards.
It's never crowded on the extra mile....

The only decks that USPCC currently publishes are the red fan backs for the Canasta set -- the faces have "helps" printed on them, and the court faces are the current courts, not those classy classic ones (with the 1way spade courts!). I resumed doing magic after the fan back reissues had been sold out, ugh! I've been worked up to the point of thinking about doing a kickstarter campaign myself! It would be the classic style with different gaffs in the red and blue backs. Phil |
