Just received my copy in Australia, and wanted to add my voice to the chorus of praise for Bobby's work.
I'm struck by the good taste and restraint that have gone into this. It isn't overdone, over-aged, overwrought. It doesn't scream chicanery or dishonesty. Simply by its existence, it establishes some very unnerving, very real credentials. The online photos don't do the piece justice. Most of my work is in theatre and film, and 'R1TUAL' strikes me as embodying the best of imagination, ingenuity, and attention to detail that might be employed in creating believable fictional worlds. It's also incredibly beautiful. Evocative and haunting. Bobby has been an absolute delight to do business with, amazingly professional and generous. Thank you! Darcy Melbourne |

I think restraint is a keyword. It could have been overdone. But it's not. It is completely perfect for the time period. A labour of love offered to Lovers of the Bizarre.

R1tual has arrived. I've had a look over it and agree with everyone else. It's a very realistic prop and aged just right. Mine has a little tear at the corner of the lid. Now, I have put it it away under my bed. I've not looked at the performance manual or the instruction leaflet in the box. I'm treating myself to a grand unveiling on the 31st October with a nice wee Brandy or two. Thanks Bobby!!

R1TUAL had its maiden voyage last night; a casual, impromptu game with my girlfriend and sister. Wanted to share some discoveries/impressions:
*I had my sister read the instructions and orchestrate play, so I was just another participant. We were all coming to it innocently, with no real expectation of what the experience would be or even how to play (I'd discussed the 'magic' nature of it with my girlfriend a few weeks ago, but she thought we were just playing it as a game, or that the 'trick' component was a separate function. My sister had been told nothing, save for planting the seeds of 'there's this underground occult game' and 'I bought a copy' and 'it's arrived' over the last month or so). *A slow-burn progression. Subtle, jumbled initial message. It was a relaxed, playful, almost nonchalant game...turned out to be the perfect lead-in to the finale... *Final message reveal struck them both silent. Paralyzed. Their eyes were like saucers. Confusion and fear, punctuated by lots of nervous laughter. It was absolutely sublime. And when my sister stumbled on the 'if the message is aggressive in any way' instruction, her response was "Oh sh*t!" *The impulse to play again was incredibly strong. This suggestion came entirely from the participants. And it sat in beautiful tension with their insistence "but we can't, it's against the rules". The pull of the transgressive! *They were convinced it was just a board-game, not any kind of magic effect. My sister would have put money on it - she was the one who assured my girlfriend that it's only a game. This was beautiful to see: as usual, the lie we tell ourselves is the strongest *For my girlfriend, merely glancing at the box sealed this belief: after the fact, during our magic debrief, she told me, "I looked at the 'R******* G****' logo and thought, oh, yeah, of course it's only a game. Silly me to have ever thought differently." She was completely floored and bewildered, because "we all shuffled...you didn't touch anything...so I thought, well, this can't be controlled or a trick." Anyway, a very satisfying starting point! |

Holy sh!t, Darcy--what a great first outing with it!! Kudos to you for jumping right in. My fave part of your highlights is the "let's do it again--OH! We can't, its the rules..."
The simple "rules" are perfect--well done Darcy, and Bobby! Seth |

Bobby has been such a pleasure to communicate with and his product R1TUAL is probably one of the best examples of bizarre magical thinking. With R1TUAL he has created a genuinely unsettling artefact - both utterly convincing and entirely plausible. Playing the game is a very frightening experience and the “rules” of the game, that state they MUST be obeyed give the whole undertaking a gravitas that feeds perfectly into your (completely hidden) performance. Because that is the true genius of this offering. It hides in plain sight; no one has the slightest clue that anything is being “done” to them. There’s nothing to think “trick”, or even feel suspicious about. It just IS a frightening exploration of a dangerous, indeed notorious board game. A beautiful addition to any performer’s arsenal. Use it carefully. And never twice in one night!

I am posting a review for R1tual from a close friend of mine that is no longer active on Café that thought some of you would enjoy. His thoughts are below:
R1tual is one of the best magic purchases I have made in a long time. While it also is the most expensive piece I have bought, thankfully, I feel it is worth every penny. I echo what many have said on the Spooky thread, that the game is virtually indistinguishable from Ouija or other occult games produced back in the day. It looks completely normal, and everyone who I have showed it to so far completely believes the provided backstory. Once it arrived, I immediately came up with the idea to showcase it as the centerpiece of a vintage piece of luggage that I supposedly bought locked, contents sight unseen, keys missing, at an estate sale at a creepy old house in New Orleans. Imagine my surprise when I picked the lock and found it full of oddities! (side note, it has been a blast collecting all the cool things to go along with it). While I have yet to perform R1tual (I am planning a special dinner party to try all the games I collected and make an evening of it with R1tual being the closer), everyone who has seen the case has been begging to be one of those I invite. I have worked out the R1tual gameplay in my head, and feel it will make a completely believable, utterly creepy reveals, that I am sure my guests will be talking about for years to come. Highly Recommended Chris D |

At last, I finally got some time to open my R1tual yesterday. It's been under my bed for 4 months quietly waiting to be looked at and although I'd looked at the props it was the first time that I'd actually read the performance manual. I had been putting it off to give me something to look forward to during this awful time and I can tell you , this has fair cheered me up!! What an absolutely fantastic routine. The props are so realistic and the back story is so believable as well, but it was the actual process of playing the game that made me smile so much. I love the way each stage builds to the big finale and what a finale it will be. It's also amazing that you can choose what happens at the end. The best thing about this effect is that it's actually totally usable leaving you to simply concentrate on your character and presentation. I feel that once we can perform again, the spectators will love this. If someone performed this to me I would be probably quite shocked at the end. Great fun and a fabulous piece of kit. I hope everyone is safe and managing okay. Best Wishes, Daisydog.

Great ideas Chris D. I have an old box I could display with mine. That would add an extra layer of eerie... Now to just figure out what to do with mom's body.

My friends who know I am doing magic and know I am collecting weird things all thought it is a 100% genuine boardgame. None had a inch of suspicious before or during the game (obviously after I explain to them why I have it , the importance ... and also showed few non-magic others items of my collection (skull of bats, story about a excavated frozen charlottes in a bottles....).
So first Bobby , your games and instruction seems 100% genuine Second , the instruction are clear enough that I let a friend reading them , and we were doing them ... no problem. Everything I planned worked. Candle : this is extremely clever . It had some suspense . One of my friend who was not really involve too much on the game , was really pushing for us to finish the game before the candle goes off ... we read the warning about the candle at the start of the game. It really had some creepy pressure. Love this a lot too. I chose to make the ending very subtle as I plan to play it again with them soon. Even if there were no crazy scary ending , I still think that this game make people wonder of the creepy aspect of a “normal game “. I think they would not mind to play it once more , this time my message could be a little more terrifyingly clear ... I think it is really wonderful Bobby you were another to invent a new board game with realistic rules and genuine (apparently) cards, board, candle holder, dice .... bravo I love it |

R1TUAL is easily one of the absolute best props/effects in all of the bizarre magic world - if not THE best. It is a gem amongst poorly "aged" props and ridiculous routines.
Not many bizarre pieces are believable no matter how hard they try - R1TUAL is certainly a work of art that not many bizarre props can hope to compare to |

I think what makes some of the bizarre props unbelievable for many is the connection to the back story. Sometimes we try to stretch the connection to having something so rare no one can believe it. Why do all spirit communications involve important people and never the town drunk or prostitute? Desire has a believable backstory for those who are familiar with the Twilight Zone series. Unfortunately, that generation may die out and the effect will have less significance without adding some history and explanation to the front-story before performing. Ritual is another believable prop. As you mentioned, poorly aged props do not help either. When Outlaw was aging in tea and water, I ordered my props un-aged and aged them myself. Just hard to believe a book prop from the 1930's looks like it has lived it's life underwater. Not even cadavers buried that long looked that bad.
