I'm searching for a Sword Swallowing trick. I've read that there are a couple real convincing ones, but no luck finding one. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, it's hard to beat doing it for real (I don't). Your best bet is to enroll in sideshow school run by Todd Robbins and learn the basics there. There is also:

I second that. There is no need to use a trick method, when the real one is so learnable.

Well, learnable is an interesting term.
George the Giant from Big Fish is my nephew. He is a geek—does the record sword swallow (because he is 7'6"!), eats glass, blows fire, sticks needles in his face, even stuffs a snake in his nose and makes it come out his mouth - the works. And it's all the real deal. I must say that is one thing I don't think I would want to try. The real thing freaks people out, even me. You can hear the sword go down his throat. God, I love geek tricks. So, given much time, puking and other tortures you could learn how to do it. Just not sure if you want to.

I'm usually a purist. Seems I might have crossed a line without looking. Guess I may change my thinking on this one. I did find the trick I was looking for. And that's what it is. A trick. I was going to use it as a quick gag (without the gag). The real thing is truly unbelievable and requires a certain individual. For which I'm not. I respect the craft, but don't think this parlour trick will ever take away from the true performance of The Sword Swallower.

I'll assume you found an old Roydon 'swallowing sword.'

There is a sword swallowing trick. I bought mine for $18. You can find them at Daytona Magic, Browser's Den, and I'm sure other places. The only one I can do so far until I'm older and able to enroll in sideshow school without having to worry about parental permission, LOL.
I was wondering...my father a long time ago found this old Ninja sword, It's VERY dull, and it seems as if it was never sharpened. I was wondering if these can be used for sword swallowing as well. Thanks! Good luck! Daniel Santos |

I remember the first time I saw a real sword swallower. It was very memorable (to be polite). Up until that point, I thought the whole thing was a trick.
I am currently working on an edition of P.T. Selbit's Magician's Handbook, and he has a short chapter on sword swallowing. His approach is to start small (spoons and such) and work your way up. It's not something I am going to be working on. |

If you get a chance, I saw a new special on Discovery, Stomachs of Steel, kind of a documentary following some Sword Swallowers as they prepare for The Big Swallow, including a novice who can't seem to get the sword down his throat (seeing that is almost worse than watching one being swallowed!)
Great Special, catch it if you can!

Why would a Novice be preparing for a 'competition' or 'Record' stunt? I'll bet the pros were ticked.
Was Brad Byers (held/holds the record) in it?

The Big Swallow is a gathering of sideshow comrades, not a "competition". It culminates in an attempt each each to record the largest number of swords swallowed simultaneously, all participants included.
Why would anyone be ticked? There was a 14 year old kid who my nephew taught to swallow in four hours. The group seems very magnanimous and accepting. I believe that was Brad in it. He attempted something like 13 swords at once. YEEEOWWWCH!!!

I didn't mean really 'ticked' in the 'normal' term. I was thinking that if it WAS a real competition that a novice being accepted as an official entry would be kind of demeaning to the pros. I had misconstrued your post. Sorry 'bout that.
Isn't 13 Brad's Guinness Book record he holds? I think that's the number. And yes...yeeeeowch! I'll have to find that show.

That novice sword swallower is actually a pro named Sideshow Bennie. He does all the working acts and is just great. He never learned swords, though, and the special followed his work on mastering the skill in time for the Sideshow Gathering. He wasn't able to down a blade on the special, but since then has gotten it down.
The 14-year-old was Al and Jeanie Tomani's grandson, Alexzander. As far as I know, Brad Byers was not at the Sideshow Gathering. That was Dai Andrews that was going for the record. |

So did he make it? Did Brad get 'unseated'? Lost his number, along with everybody elses, so excuse the dumb questions on occasion, Todd.
Everybody in the biz bought the rumor that I was Dead! (Thanks, Mark F. and James T.!) So I haven't gotten many calls from the 'bunch' lately. My Wife did get a call a few months ago from a showman offering condolences! Hahaha.

Doug,
I'm sorry to hear about your death. You were such a great guy. I'm going to miss you. As far as I know, the Guinness people were not at the Gathering, so I don't think there was anything "official" about that world's record. By the way, I have a condolence card that was sent to my family sent by the IBM in regard to my death a few years ago. Maybe they know something I don't? |
