I am a VERY amateur wood worker and wood carver............roughly along the lines of ADVANCED Boy Scout (on a good day). Out of nothing more than old-fashioned curiosity: I wish I could see some videos (or whatever) of magic makers who work with (or workED with) metal......? Yes, 'trade secrets' certainly come into play.........but is there ANYTHING our there on shops that dealt with making items using aluminum and other types of metal(s)?? You know: Foo cans and Chop Cups etc. etc. .....?

No videos that I'm aware of , but the highly skilled craftsman , James Riser, occasionally drops some breadcrumbs for those who want to follow the trail.
Look through his website and be sure to click all the links . You might find a few things of interest. http://www.jamesriser.com/Magic/JamesRiserMagic.html |

What you have to do, is purchase all the props you think you can manufacture, and measure them. Morrissey problem was they did not buff and shine their products. Sure it is more work, but people like shiny new props. They also did not advertise a number of props that they made specially for professional magicians, even after they passed away. An example is General Grant had Morrissey make his dye tubes, Zombie Balls that he sold at magic conventions and by mail. Also they made a special Coin Pail for a famous magician, and refused to offer it to the magic community.
I often wondered how they stayed in business all those years. The original owner of Rings and Things number 1, started his business and wanted to wholesale them. Someone got him an interview with D. Robbins and Co. He was not happy, because at the end of the Interview The owner said, "I will take 20,000 Linking Rings. After a month or so of making Linking Rings and Zombie's He got tired and sick of making them. He started to fall behind in production. Tim Star joined his, and started making new products, which is what the owner wanted to do. Star finally went back to his country, and Ring's and Thing's went out of business and put it up for sale. Of course there was another matter which I will not get into, as it could happen to anyone. Someone is making again a few of the P & L products, but he is completely staying out of the community sight. Abbott's Magic originally sold the P&L line to a metal craftsman, but he tried to turn out pieces that came more from the tool and die type of metal work. No rounded corners, and polished. This new offerings, are very highly made, but the prices are also steep, and is choice of items are more the collector then the working performer. In other words, something to set on shelf. What I am suggesting, check out your business skills as well as your craftsmen skills, before taking on a business. |
