Just curiously, what do you wear when either working restaurants or doing any kind of walk around magic (or I suppose parlor shows)? I am trying to decide between wearing a sport coat or wearing a vest. I want to get a seamstress friend to sew a bunch of specialty pockets into whatever I wear to be able to carry all my effects effectively. I am leaning towards wearing a Sport Coat rather than a vest simply because I do Deja Voodoo and putting the dictionary in the outside pocket seems much better than trying to make an inside pocket where it just bulges out, lol. Also, I might sew a topit into the jacket and get back into some topit work. I also might consider having my friend sew in an ITR pocket into this as well. Have any of you done this before and how has it worked? Thanks for all the input in advance!

You're going to hate the answer. It depends.

Dress for where you are.

One word of caution. Jackets and vests and such are not designed to carry much stuff in them. The fit begins to look compromised and pulled out of shape pretty quickly and you end up looking frumpy. That Oxford Pocket Dictionary alone will cause an odd fit.

Have your friend not only sew pockets but make sure how the fit is when you're done.

I agree with Dannydoyle that it depends. It depends on the venue and the audience. I wear either a jacket or I wear a vest. On rare occasions I wear both. Most often I wear a vest but the vest has been tailored to fit me plus the tailor installed additional pockets and 'topit' to my exact specifications. The outside of the vest has two small lower pockets and one higher breast pocket. I have a heavier weight vest and a lighter weight vest depending on the seasonal temperature or indoor/outdoor. The style of vest is a "western motif" red with some trim and a pattern. The jacket is double breasted and has a nautical look with black on black trim on the sleeves with some gold stars with the black trim. The jacket has large very accessible pockets on the outside.
May every day be magic!
