Just looking for something to carry a deck around without destroying it by carrying it loosley in a pocket.
I've seen a metal thing that wraps 3/4 around a deck. It looks like a metal 'U' that covers the face, back, and one side of a deck, but it adds so much weight to the deck. Any other ideas? Phil |

If you are so weak that you can't carry the extra
weight, then your decks WILL be ruined If you don't care about the deck-case, have the cards inside of that, and the cards will last longer. Or you can use a jacket with big pockets, you can carry the deck in your hands, you can have it in a purse - there is tons of choices which only YOU can make - whatever suits you style...

Try carrying it in you hand. If not your pockets. Try stuffing it in your shoe, between your teeth.
If your still not sure how to carry a deck of cards, just toss it on the floor in front of you and kick it all the way to the destination.

Get a Porper clip. None better, and the copies don't work properly. I think you can find one at http://www.porperoriginals.com

Although a metal clip will add some weight, it can be easily carried without even noticing it. I have been using one for around seven or eight years now, and never leave home without it. It is always with me, and it never gives me any trouble. Likewise, my deck is always in great condition when I remove it from the box. I very highly suggest one. I do not have a Porper case, but like Pete says, the Porper is the original and the best. Get yourself one of those, and you will certainly not be dissapointed.

If you don't go with the porper clip (which you should) then carry it in a shirt pocket. Won't get ruined there.

Yeah, just get a card clip. Trust us, the weight won't kill you, hehe.
By the way, I currently have a 5 dollar card clip I got online, but I always hear about the Joe Porper one. It's very expensive and everyone praises it, so I'm interested in getting it. Could someone tell me what's so great about it comnpared to the cheaper versions? Thanks in advance. |

Thanks for the link - I never heard of a Porper clip.
From the website descriptions: Joe Porper invented the card clip. During his absence from magic, several dealers tried to make clips like Joe's but they simply didn't work. Joe's original was cut from a solid block of metal, not bent over to create the necessary shape. Now Joe has re-engineered this simple device to protect a deck perfectly. By pulling the sprung edges back from the deck, Joe has created an even grip across the cards. By shaping the clip properly he has made inserting and removing the deck simple. Protect your most versatile props - carry them in a Porper clip. [Cost $30] Hmm. the picture shows a black clip. He also says that his original was metal, but I wonder if the current model is metal, or plastic. Thanks for the help! Phil |

Joe's clip is the best and in the long run you'll be saving more money because your deck lasts longer.

Some magicians don't like the clips because they can burn holes in your pocket, and take up extra space.
I also know a few magicians who don't carry their cards in a cardbox. They just carry them in their side jacket pocket. The reason they do this is for better pocket management. There aren't that many variables. Just try out the various options and stick with what works for you. Jeremy |

I personally just carry the deck in my pants pocket or any other convenient pocket. I do not make an issue of how the deck is carried. Depending on how many decks of cards you go through a month, you probably would want to protect it if you only go through one a month. Personally, between practicing and performing, I go through at least 12-15 decks a month. I know the deck of cards will get worn so I do not make carrying it an issue.

I make my own cases out of various things. My latest ones are thick black plastic. they feel great, nice and stiff, good protection.

Ok maybe I am weird but I don't get it! How do the cards get destroyed? I only use a deck for 1 night at a resteraunt then I put in in a box to practice the mecrcury card fold. Come to think of it The box is huge because I have yet to practice!

Joshua Jay markets a nice little leather carrying case, that fits a single deck and has another pocket that would fit a few coins or business cards. I'm a little surprised no one mentioned that.

To answer some questions about the Porper's clip:
- It is black but it is metal (not plastic) - It is GREAT: I used a "regular" card guard and when I shifted to Porper's one I felt the difference - It is LIGHTER than the other one's. I think it due to the fact that it's aluminium (but I am not sure about that.) - It is "soft": there won't be a sharp angle which will destroy the bottom of your pocket. You'll still be able to "toss it on the floor infront of you and kick it all the way to the destination" (I laughed when I read that.) Jonathan. |

I can understand why you wouldn't want the cards loose in your pocket during your daily activity. To answer a previous question, if you use your pockets during your daily life, cards will get bent and torn if they are loose in your pocket. Not everyone is carrying cards for a set at the restaurant.
If I have a pack of cards with me, they will have a rubberband around them. This does not keep them pristine, but they are useable. It seems a little excessive to carry your cards around in the clips like they are valuable and then ask the spectator to assume that they are just regular cards. The rubberband is also useful for a couple of tricks. I am aware that pristine cards are necessary for some card work, but the suspicion factor would seem to be a problem. Maybe I am just not dazzling enough for them to not notice this. |

I just wanted to thank everyone for their input, especiall Jonathan. I'm going to order the Porper clip.
To answer some of the other questions in the thread. - I plan on carrying a deck all day. At least for a while. I don't do sets, I just like to be prepared to perform when ever needed. - I'm putting a lot of thought and work into my deck (see other threads) - suffice to say it's not a standard deck. Phil |
