For anybody that doesn't know...Harry announced a second printing yesterday. It's available on his website. I have been badgering him, like many others, and waiting. I am finally getting a copy! I could not be more ecstatic.

Yes, I've ordered a copy. It's been impossible to find on the second hand market. What I like about Harry Lorayne books is that they are so self-contained - they don't require gaffs or gimmicks or anything external. All you need is a deck of cards and you can do pretty much every trick in the book. And the tricks are all practical in that any sleights are not too difficult and are obtainable with practice. And, if they do require sleights, they're explained really well and variations are given. They're actually great books to take on holiday with you when luggage space is at a premium.

I never travel anywhere without a couple of Lorayne books and a pack of cards. JawDroppers is fantastic.

This is indeed great news for many who have searched in vain for a copy.
It's never crowded on the extra mile....

It is a fantastic card book.
Overflowing with powerful, regular deck, close-up card magic. One of my all time favourite books. |

I have some of Harry s books, amongst many others, and I can say that he is one of the great minds in card magic. Most importantly is that he is simplifying the technique without scarifying the effect. That is the characteristic of a master and expert in the matter.
I would have been grateful to have Harry as a card magic teacher in another life. Thanks Harry for your awesome contribution in card magic.
Do your best and forget the rest

So for someone like me who is slowly building up my library of card magic books, would you recommend a book like Jawdroppers before getting something like The Essential Dai Vernon?
I'm sure everyone can suggest plenty of other books to get (and there's plenty of great threads to go through), but I'm wondering how far up in priority a book like Jawdroppers would find itself and how hard it is likely to become to get again in the future when this printing sells out. |

I have not seen a lot of Dai Vernon's performances but Harry could make a recitation of the phone book entertaining.
Really some memory-based routines can come off as a bit boring, but Harry's ability to engage with the audience continuously while performing without ever losing his place is just phenomenal to me. Someone recently posted an old video of Harry at an awards event performing something like a 15-minute memory routine and I was thoroughly engaged the entire time. He is one-of-a-kind and his style is his own. |

There is a difference between hero worship and recognizing artistry.
As a young man, Mr. Lorayne impressed the heavyweights of closeup with his abilities with a pack of cards. He fooled the best of the best and became a heavyweight himself. His ability to "jazz" with a deck in real life situations, his ability to remember cards and do mental gymnastics during the changing conditions of an impromptu scenario ALL THE WHILE presenting an entertaining, engaging, magical experience is an artform few if any are capable of. He is a best selling author. His teaching is legendary and his students all over the world agree that his writing makes them feel as though he is there with you- teaching you in person. The ability to write in this fashion, while still accurately describing technical aspects, is an artform. His stage performances with the lovely Renee and his nationally televised performances on t prime time networks were masterful and held audiences riveted. Harry Lorayne is very much an artist- and one of the best. |

Snappy Flush Updated on pg 117 is one of my favourite things to do with a deck of cards. Its, quick, its flashy, and it's a reputation maker.
Take Five is a personal favourite. Also, Four Second Wonder- Revised eliminates the two card pull back process from this modern classic. Just a few more gems. |

I suppose if I'm comfortable referring to Larry Jennings, Penn and Teller and Eddie Fechter as artists, it's not the greatest mental leap to allow a few others like Giobbi and Lorayne in as well. I suppose they're all artists, really, and kings of their craft. It's a nice positive way to look at things, and pay them tribute. That still doesn't mean I'd be comfortable challenging or deriding someone else who hasn't taken that mental leap. I wouldn't want to come across as a Fechter purity test zealot, for instance, because I know that it would be ridiculous to insist he's universally acclaimed as the best and anyone who just "likes" what he does clearly hasn't taken the time to appreciate that, no, Eddie was actual best, etc. I'm not a missionary from the Fechter Foundation trying to convert the natives [but let's be honest folks, imagine what a *wild* and swinging church that would be, lol] |

"Best" ? No. That would be foolhardy. But he was definitely great. And he was definitely an artist.
