I already have the Ninja Rings DVD.
I am in the market for Capehart's but my usual place doesn't carry it. So far, Cellini's is the only one that makes me weep. Frank

I believe you can only get Capehart's DVD through Capehart himself or through Denny and Lee; that's where I bought. Cellini's routine is beautiful - probably the most beautiful I've ever seen. Capehart's is just an amazing piece of magic. Laymen watching this routine have got to believe they're seeing real magic. Ron |

Frank, let us know how you like it.
I got a standing ovation from doing much of the Capehart stuff with my own twists Saturday night. Had about 60 folks in the audience, as we did a show for a local college town coffee house that has a little stage. I did it with a self locking 12" ring set, and frankly I wasn't very happy with it, but one of my normal rings got misplaced during a recent flood and cleanup in my basement. So I had to use this set as it had three rings. But I definitely recommmend a normal key set. And I use 10" rings normally and I think they are big enough. Anyway, I did the whole routine, even ran out in the audience - pretty much the same as I do in my street routine. And was in their faces with the links, and unlinks. I closed it with the crash link of a second ring, after I had already crash linked the first, then went with the two rings locked between the center one (you will see it on Chris's dvd) and there was an aubible gasp by the whole audience when after proving I couldn't go to the left, or the right, and told I them only had 20 minute show, and 20 minutes was up, so I had better go ...... and I just dropped both hands and the two rings looked like they melted through the other one and I turned and started walking away.....The applause was just what you want to hear! And they all stood up with it! Good stuff! You gotta like it! BroDavid

I have Cellini's DVD and Tom Franks's "The Legend of the Five Mystic Rings." Between the two I hope to learn a beautiful presentation.
Now, where do I get the rings? Please don't say Owens! Yes, I know they are absolutely the best, but I can't afford the best right now. I need a good basic set, actually I only need 5 rings: 2 singles, a chain of two, and a key (NOT locking). And I'd like a set that are thicker than the quarter inch chromed steel rings most places are selling. So far, the nicest looking ones I've found for a reasonable price are these at Stevens Magic. Does anyone here know anything about them? Any other recommendations at the entry level price bracket? |

Capehart told me to use 10 inch rings (I had been thinking I wanted to get a 12 inch set) and he told me to get a cheap set. I paid $50 or so for my 10 inch set.

10-inch rings are the best size. Bigger rings tend to be a bit awkward for most routines.
Scott... as much as I love Stevens Magic, I would stay a way from aluminum rings. If you want lightweights save up for hollow stainless steel. I have used the same set for almost 40 years and they still look new. Sure, they are Owens. Save your money for them or Porper's (altho Porper's are larger than 10 inch). If you want a Porper set of 2 singles and 1 key, PM me for a deal. Note: I would STAY AWAY from a locking key.

Pete's right. The locking key is more trouble than it's worth. The aluminum rings are very light but sound terrible. Part of the magic is the musical sound of the rings as they penetrate. I would recommend 12 inch rings. Mine are Owen and I love them.

One of the nice things about Cellinis routine is there is no sound, just one little ding. that's it.
They melt through. They are not slammed koz |

No doubt Ted, Cellini's routine is downright elegant.
The rings do look like they simply melt through one another. I don't know that I even heard the little ding that you talk about So if it works for your style, it is a great starting point! And even though I do a completely different routine, I do take a couple of moves from the Cellini. BroDavid

On the DVD there are 2 noises.
He drops one ring onto the other after it melts through. He spins one ring on the other once. I think it is a good idea that he make the noise to remind you what could be happening... but it's not. Frank

Yea! Well when we recorded that routine we did it with out sound and then edited the sound in.
The music was there but it was different music. There was some nifty editing going on there, but the routine is just as you see if Cellini were to do it live in front of you. There would be just the 2 sounds Frank mentioned: the drop and the spin and then of course the music. Truly a beautiful piece of magic. It is close to being my favavorite routine. The other Cellini routine that just kills me (this is opinion just mine) is the cigerrette routine. Funny and great magic he does so darn well. On the art of part 2, which is at the replicators as we speak (FINALLY) it's different and I hope you like both the 2 new DVDs. koz |

Ok. I was up until 2:00 am doing this routine over and over again.
I couldn't believe the first time I went all the way through it without looking at my notes or the TV. Just listening to the music and doing the routine. It is not a difficult routine to get to that point but I don't see how he can do it so silently yet. I know the DVD was recorded without sound but still... I saw Cellini do it live and there was nary a "tink" to those rings except for the drop and the spin. I've got all the moves down but my rings still make too much noise. Doing it slowly really helps though. There are a lot of great moves in this routine. I learned a lot even if I never perform it. One other thing this routine teaches you is.... posture and body language. Since it's done to music (or should be in my opinion) you can really feel yourself standing awkwardly or leaning funny or not standing up straight or not reaching high enough. It provides a very good lesson there. Has anyone done this routine to NO music and had a good reaction? Or done it at all? Please share! I hope Biro has seen this routine. Pete?

Frank,
I worked hard ont his routine before I learned about Chris Capehart's, and I had exactly the same experience as you. The only way I could keep the rings quiet was to go very slowly, as oyu have already found out. And I have to admit that I stopped practicing the routine before I got it sufficiently quieted down, but it got quieter the more I practiced and I stopped having to think so much about every move. I think familiarity with all the moves will be the key so you can anticipate and control the rings better. However having said all of that, when I do my routine now, I am all about crashing and clanking the rings to make as much noise as possible, so what do I know? Good luck! The Cellini routine is certainly a beautiful routine. But it wont come easily to do it Cellini does it. I think he may have done it for at least 2-3 years NOT! Who knows how many decades Jim has put into it to create such a graceful work of art? So you can't expect it to come too quickly, but I do imagine that it is a matter of lots and lots of practice. BroDavid,
I agree about crashing. I think the crash link is one of the most powerful things in magic. And speaking of Capehart's routine. I really like it. But when he unlinks and relinks and unlinks and relinks. I wonder if this takes something away from the routine. The link is magical but I'm not sure about the unlink. It should be magical but he focuses entirely on the link part of it and the unlink is disregarded. Obviously, he's just preparing for another crash link for the next spectator. This is while he's prancing around showing everybody his "impossible link". Any opinions on that?

The unlink is one of my best reaction getters Frank! But people don't know that is that they are reacting to the unlink - since it happens as part of anothr sequence.
In fact magicians even like that part And I have been asked by almost all who see it, to show them the unlink, since they already had a pretty good idea about the link, even though they can never see it or the link.... And also, by the way, I think the unlink is the least explained thing on Chris' DVD. As I recal when I watched it first, he just sort of tells you what to do, and shows it done. And that is that. As a result, I had a very hard time learning it. Maybe because of that, I spent more time thinking about the unlink and how to "frame it" in my performance. As my routine evolved, I learned that (at least for me to feel good about it) I needed to make it part of something else. And becase, as I have said before, I like to be in their faces, I started almost taunting the specs with the rings by banging them together a lot. So this is what I do: When I am going to link, before I actually do it, I bang my right hand ring (you know which one that is) on the top of the ring in my left hand as if I am about to crash it. I then do the same thing and bang it on the bottom of the ring in the same sort of way. So I come down with it, Bang! Come up with it and hit the top of the ring in my right hand on the bottom of the ring in my left hand. Bang! Then I go back to the top, and I crash link it; Wham! Often, I do the alternate banging on top and bottom several times each as I talk to the crowd (taunting them) getting them to agree how impossible it would be. But anyway, then I finally do the crash link, and I end up staring with amazement at what I have just done, with the ring that did the penetration stopped an inch or so after the ring "penetrated". I hold it and am leaned over staring at it for a few seconds to let it sink in visually. Then I drop the penetrated ring ring from my left hand. Clink! (an at that moment a pin dropping would be heard, so that clink is an awesome moment) And then I spin it a good spin. All the while talking about how impossible that would be to do that (and I have already done it) and then I grab that ring with my left hand, and just do the unlink. But I don't stop it there, I just I go rigght back to the sequence that I started with. By this I mean that as soon as the unlink is made, I come up and bang the penetrating ring down on the ring in my left hand, and back on the bottom of the ring, while still talking to the crowd about how impossible it is - I have actually gotten people to agree with me that since what I said I would do, one ring thru the solid ring is impossible, I must never have done it. It must have been an illusion. And they really will agree with me! I like the extra action (banging top and bottom) with the ring before the link, and after the unlink, as it as stretches the routine as long as you need to while you draw, gives me more time to talk to the crowd, seems like it separates the link and unlink, even thoguh it really doesn't. But it does make the unlink more than a simple unlink, and serves to make it almost invisible in the specs mind. Only one thing happened (in their minds) The rings got linked right before their very eves! And that is impossible. And now, suddenly they are not linked anymore, so maybe it didn't really happen. But they know they saw them link right before their eyes.! Didn't they? The more that I can get them to agree with the impossiblity of the linking, the more I hold their attention, and the I can play out the hat line of how anything that amazing must be making you get that fiver ready. Really, I know you will. And look over there - >> he has his fiver ready, (if he can do five, maybe you will want to do ten?) and when I am done, you don't want to be fumbling around in your wallet or purse looking for a loose fiver or 10. You will want to be ready to applaud because this is so good, and you know that you will want to put that five in my hat becuase it is so great! And you cant applaud if you you are fooling with your wallet, so just do it now! Get your fiver ready. don't embarrass yourself later trying to find it, because you know you are going to want to appluaud. I know you will, cause you havent even seen the best stuff yet. Wait until you see what is next! Get your fiver ready now, all the while banging the ring on top, and on the botton, and getting ready to do the link, and the crash with a ring already linked. (I am still amazed every time I see this one and even often tell the specs that too! ) But I think you have to just "remove" the unlink from their perception. Make it invisible by immediately going back to an action you previously did, and repeating that action so that the link happenes as part on a familiar sequence - rendering the unlink inviisble. Anyway, that is what I do, and it works for me. At the IBM in Cleveland, I did my ring routine for a couple of new Magician friends, and got the same great reaction as always. This is the one thing I will do exactly the same for magicians and lay people. The lay people are more amazed by the link, the magi more amazed by the unlink. Sorry for rambling along so much on this. But you can tell I have thought a lot about the unlink. Hope that helps a bit. BroDavid

I think you're right. I did have questions about the unlink until I played with it for a while.
I specifically remember saying to myself.. "I wonder how he does that unlink". ... and it's not on the DVD. You're right there too. I liked your post. Frank
