Hi everyone,
Lately I've been exploring the multiple base options for modern illusions and weighing up the advantages and disadvantages of each. While doing this the possibility of a 'Seemingly Impromptu Base' occurred to me. I was wondering if there was any interest in what I've come up with below? - Imagine being able to perform base work under all conditions and practically anywhere without having to transport a heavy piece of equipment. A base that consists of ORDINARY OBJECTS that can be carried under the arm. Set the base up on a theater stage, on the street, in your living room, on a trade show floor ALL IN UNDER TWO MINUTES. It could be used to vanish, appear, transform etc. It would also allow you to 'sink vanish' or 'rise appear'. By this I mean sinking into or rising out of a 1/2 inch thick piece of wood, plastic, metal or whatever takes your fancy. Load capacity could possibly be up to 3 people. If theres any interest I will provide more details at a later date. Would something like this be of any interest to the illusion community? I would really appreciate your thoughts. Kind regards, Mike

This sounds very good. Once you have it built, I'll bet you could sell a bunch of them. Keep dated notes, and keep records on everything.

Good idea Mike. Count me in too. I heard of a magician in Singapore who did about 20 illusions. He never carried anything other than Corrugated sheets. He would reach the venue 2 days in advance and make all his props which also included base work using scotch tapes, do the show and get back. I don't know if the story is true but it may be of help to you even if it isn't.

The Seemingly Impromptu Base © – Design by Mike Rogers June 2004
“An innovative new base design utilizing common objects that can be assembled in a few minutes and transported with ease.” The Seemingly Impromptu Base © is, in basic terms, a raised platform made from everyday objects. The actual platform area is made from a few sheets of wood creating a standing area of approximately 4.5 x 3.5 feet. This platform is raised from the ground about 3.0 feet by …(info to be released soon would like to keep this confidential at present). The styling is very basic and ties in with the ‘threw it together’ feel. Possible effects include appearances, vanishes, transformations of an assistant or performer and could possibly be adapted for the use of more than one assistant or performer. Sink vanishes and appearances could also be possible with the addition of a certain attachment. Cover for the possible effects is up to the performers personal opinion. Ideal cover would be a simple white cloth draped over the performer, assistant or platform for the sink style effects. The unit will be designed and built with complete deception and quality in mind and should allow for complete surrounded angles if desired. Breakdown is simple and compact and the unit should not be beyond the lifting capabilities of anyone. The platform section breaks into two sections and another two sub-sections that can be stacked under the arm with ease. The release of the Seemingly Impromptu Base © is not a certainty at the moment. However if it is released for sale then it’s likely to be sold as a complete unit. Further details regarding this will come at a later date. Price has not yet been considered but is highly likely to be below $1000. If there are any design elements you would like included in the Seemingly Impromptu Base © then please don’t hesitate to contact me. All comments, opinions, questions are also welcome. The Seemingly Impromptu Base © has and still is being designed with practicality and the performer in mind so please don’t hesitate to contribute to it’s evolution. “The Seemingly Impromptu Base © is coming…” Mike Rogers Mike Rogers Illusion Design 16/6/04

Will be in discussions with US builders...I don't think it will be built in Australia . Other than the prototype.
Thanks, Mike

Easily the best convention I've ever been to.
Norbert Ferre, Lee Eun Gyeol and Henry Evans were brilliant. Great shows, Great Lectures and Workshops. Loads of fun. I don't think we'll see another like it again... -malini. |
