Vanille Playing Cards - Paul Robaia

The Hype:
A limited edition print, Vanille Playing Cards are a marriage of minimalism and modernism.

A rich mint and black flirt with one another to provide beautiful juxtaposition and depth within the back design. The back design is complimented with minimal face cards where a striking color palette is further presented.

Composed of the same mint and black, it also hosts yellow and red. Together, the colors create a sensory experience of utter beauty and sleekness.

Designed by Paul Robaia, Vanille was printed at The United States Playing Card Company.
Its matching, elegant letterpress tuck box was printed from Clove Street Press.
These cards are suited for magicians, cardists, and collectors.

My Take:
Paul Robaia may be an amateur magician but his card designs prove that he is at the top of his game when it comes to his decks. The Vanille deck has a back design that covers the back of the cards, unlike some of the minimalist decks being currently offered. The design has an almost Escher feel to it. This makes for a stunning display on either a fan or a ribbon spread.

The colors are not what you are used to seeing. On the Ace of Spades, the Spade is actually composed to four different colors, black, red, blue and yellow. On the face cards, the faces and hands are printed in a light blue so they don't stand out but the contrast with the reds and blacks make this unusual color scheme work nicely.

The Jokers do not even say Joker on them. Each has a different cartoon of a magician and hit rabbit with the rabbit making wisecracks. Cute plus it adds a little charm to the general feel of the deck.

Printed by the USPCC, this deck is of superb quality. Although it may be slanted towards collectors and cardisrry folks, this will go just fine in your card routines. And the deck is Faro friendly right out of the box.

You also get a double backer with the two sides being different color schemes making it ideal for a color changing deck routine. The last card has the standard Vanille back but the other side has a nice Club graphic with a url of paperclubs.com. Unfortunately, this website does not exist.

I happen to like this deck somewhat more than a lot of the other decks being released. The back design is eye catching and the color scheme is unusual. The deck is in the standard price range of new decks being offered. I would recommend this deck.
