Hi Guys.
I recently purchased the Full Facts Of Cold Reading By Ian Rowland. Wonderfully interesting, but I have yet to try it out on real people. It seems you need to do it all out, or not at all- it seems impossible to practise, unless you are giving a real reading to a paying customer- as you can't practise on friends or family. However, you need to be experienced to be doing that anyway, and so its a bit of a vicious circle. Anyone correcting me and giving some tips would be very welcome. Anyway, I'd love to perform cold reading in an informal situation, or as part of a mentalism routine, but it seems to need to be performed in a quite formal area. This is another reason I have yet to try it out, as my work is in busy pubs and clubs and so on. Any tips, views or advice would be greatly appreciated, Thank you, Simon, 20, UK |

Darmoe has a whole series of psychic reading information. I don't know how much would be in the category of 'cold reading,' I expect that more would be about real reading, which is what you should learn anyway. He does seem to know his stuff, and it's carried by our own Andy Leviss, who seems very discriminating in his tastes.

YOu might want to introduce some of the CR in after you reveal a card, and start giving a little significance to the card and the person you have in front of you. Just a little reading, off the cuff, no big deal, see her/his reaction. Play it from there latter. You will be amazed at how interested people are in finding out more about themselfs. Be prepared with more info, they will ask you to do a lot more, and before you know it they will invite other people to come and share in the experience.
Hope this helps. E-Leoni. |

I'm about to open an interesting can of worms (far beit for me to do such a thing... )
Ian's book is exceptional in many ways... a great resource for "advanced" study... I think every student of CR needs to start with some of the more "proven" basics. If you check out my series @ On-line Visions you'll get a taste of what my perspectives offer (and do note, I present things with a very "defensive" sense of bias). NOW FOR THE WORM THING... I also loathe Ian's material because it encourages some highly unorthodoxed acts of harrassment towards those working in the Psychic Reading fields. I've expressed upon more than one occassion that members of the Shut Eye community need to take flyers out in front of Mr. Rowland's shows and expose how he's doing what he does and thus, waste his time and money as well... IN short, it's one in the same... No one wins! Too, as many know, I believe a middle ground exists when it comes to this issue e.g. both believers & skeptics are right and wrong in the extremes they present... the Shut Eye world needs to open its eyes and recognize the con and the Skeptic side of things needs to recognize what SCIENCE itself endorses, which is the hidden factor... the possability of validity even though something may not be able to be replicated as the result of an unknown quantity or influence. Somewhere in that middle ground is where the truth to this issue lays. Now as to my book series mentioned by Chris... Psychic Technologies focuses more on Marketing ideas for mentalist & macabre performers, revealing different markets/venues we can exploit and use to our advantage. There's very little in way of "effect" explanation (though some things are tipped such as billet work, basic Reading methods, etc.) For over two-years now I've been researching and attempting to compile a comprehensive tome known as "The Reader's Bible"... we've approached this from several different angles and the current thinking (for the sake of simplicity and giving YOU as much solid material as we can in the easiest manner to learn it) is that it will become a Video/DVD series with a work book... in all truth, we're still looking at at least two more years before we can consider this project "worthy of its name". I can assure you, nothing as complete as this course has ever been attempted in the past... it is seriously All Enclusive! For the sake of doing so I'll suggest anyone new to the art of Reading to pick up everything by Herb Dewey with "King of Cold Readers" being at the top of that list. The Rowland book is also a must. I'll also recommend all of Richard Webster's books, videos and manuscripts on Reading techniques and of course Kenton Kneppers "Completely Cold" and related texts. Aside from all this I'd learn the legit side of Asian Face Reading, Body Shape Reading (I believe Ford has a tome on that topic???), Asian & European styled Astrology, Numerology, Jugian Psychology and an odd little book by Louise L. Hay entitled "You Can Heal Your Life"... it may not make sense to you right now, but when you start paying attention to what I share @ Visions, the PT series and what will be covered in "The Bible" it all comes together in a way that, when consciously applied, it will make you one of the most awesome Readers imaginable (bear in mind, I get tested on my ability and accuracy as a Reader about every two years... I currently have 3 sources listing me at over 96% in accuracy on live "person to person" Readings; 72% accurate on "Prediction" type situations; and over 92% right on when doing a Remote Reading (by phone of net)... in other words, I think I might be doing something right. Later!

However, you need to be experienced to be doing that anyway, and so its a bit of a vicious circle. Anyone correcting me and giving some tips would be very welcome. Many very experienced readers have suggested learning an actual reading method (such as palmistry or tarot). I mentioned Darmoe's ebooks because I have read him saying this many times. IMO, what magicians call 'cold reading' is already built into these systems, plus they contain more--a richer tapestry of archetypes, if you will. Although I am not much of a reader myself, I will say that they are perfect for informal situations. If you practice a system, there is no reason you can't practice on family and friends. Even in casual social situations, if you simply say, "I am just learning to read palms, would you like me to read yours?"--not only will you be forgiven for your flaws, you'll gather a group around you of eager, attractive females just begging to have their palms read. It's a good thing! --Christopher Carter |

OK< my reply may give a slightly different slant to the process. As I recoomend in one of my manuscripts, a good way to learn is going to readers and studying their methods. Not in a harassing or blocking manor as touted in a book often cited on this list.
But in an open manor. A good way to practice, is to do readings in your mind, on people around you. The person at the next table in the resteraunt. The clerk in the retail store. For real workd practice, you're right, certainly not friends and family, but waitresses , bartenders and other service people. When theyt hand you something, look at their hand and comment on it. And based on acceptance do a mini-reading. They, because they are service people will be inclined to be polite. This will give you practice from Ford |

Ford... I fully support what you're saying. One of my books (I forget which) tells the neophyte to simply learn how to watch people... go to the mall, ride the bus... learn how to study people and create your own form of pigeon hole based on "types"... in other words, do imaginary Readings... I do believe this is hinted at in the Visions series.
Learning from an experienced Reader is, without a doubt, one of the greatest tools you can give yourself... provided the person you're learning from is good, of course. I heard rumor that Herb Dewey used to demand a whopping $1k a day from magicians wanting to sit in and learn his techniques one-on-one (and got it!) I know of some that have hinted at the idea of paying me a handsome price for a week's worth of hands on study... now, if they'd just make good on the cash and show up, I'd be willing

Rather than spend a lot of time reading "cold reading" material written for consumption by the magic community, I would recommend going to the library or local bookstore (or ideally, the local new age shop) and concentrate on books that reflect the current thinking on divination and related subjects.
If you are to be taken seriously as a psychic reader, you will need to understand where your clients are coming from and what their belief systems are all about. Knowledge of magician-oriented "cold reading" technique should be considered merely supplemental reading at best. Joe Z.

In addition to his insider material, Richard Webster has published quite a few "legit" books on palmistry and other metaphysical subjects which are excellent reading and available from many book stores.
Brian Addendum: Richard has apparently published a book titled "Is Your Pet Psychic?" Possibly a useful bit of research in light of the Pet Psychic's recent rise to fame. |

Get a hold of it and you will be convincing skeptics in no time. I can't recommend this book enough. It's easy to start this way as you concentrate on variuos parts of the hand for a while before moving on to other parts. Just to look at the hands of friends and try it out its that easy. It's a really easy way to learn. It was one of the first books I got hold of and the most difficult part is actually starting. I thougt "this would never work" I couldn't believe how strong it plays even to the most skeptical people. Since then Ive bought lots of books including "Full Facts". I think Ian's book is a good book but it doesn't teach you a system to follow its more of an overview of cold reading as a whole. It won't teach you much specifics...you need a system. Richard has a series of cold reading Books so far all of the ones I've bought are excellent but Quick and Effective Cold Reading is a must.. |

Thanks for the information guys, and thank you for the recommendation Shrink. I'll definitely have to look into that. Would it be appropriate in the middle of a magic act though?
