Hi all, can anyone point me in the right direction?
I'm after any material on very large illusion, i.e. appearing/vanishing cars, jets, helicopters, trains, boats, bridges etc, etc. Any help would be much appreciated Thanks |

Wayne Dobson made a helicopter vanish at the start of his first TV series on British Television. (It was 1990 I think).
You may like to find a video of the show if you know somoene who has it, and see that presentation. (The video isn't commercially available however, so it may be difficult obtaining it). Cheers, Brian.

Here's my info:
Garry Ouellet made a Lear Jet vanish or an appearance for $200000. Bill Smith made it. Gerry Frenette makes a car vanish for around $4000. Steve Wyrick does a plane appearance called RPLA. I don't know who made it for him. David's jet and train vanish ideas came from Jim Steinmeyer and Don Wayne {I guess}. I will think of more and post them. Cheers |

PM me Sean. I can help you work a few of these unless you want to make them yourselves or will only have good old Steinmeyer for a consultant.
These things to the best of my knowledge are not in print or at least not the actual ideas. Cheers dude |

From my knowledge there hasn't been much about these types of illusions ever published. Most of the ideas and designs come direct from illusion designers themselves. I.E Steinmeyer & Copperfield - Liberty Vanish. Although some small automobile illusions (car, motorcyle) can be purchased from builders/designers.
The only published illusion that I know that's relevant to this topic is a motorcyle appearance in one of Andrew Maynes' illusion books however I don't own a copy so cant comment on it any further. The king of the BIG illusions, more specifically large vanishes, is Franz Harary. He has performed a few of them over the years. If your really interested in trying something like this, and by that I mean actually performing one, then you should contact Franz himself. I'm not positive if he sells the rights to the method/s he uses to acomplish these illusions but if he does the price wont be cheap. Possibly running close to a mil. Alternatively you could contact an illusion designer and describe what you had in mind. These sorts of illusions are not really the design and build at home type . They require serious planning, quality design and manufacturing, rehearsal etc. Which all in turn requires a BIG budget $$$. If your really really really serious about it all then try contacting Franz or an illusion designer. It's a massive project though. If your just curious about methods then I don't think there's really much available publication wise. Try looking into optical illusion books though, S. Sharpe, Morrit etc. They might/should aid you in designing your own BIG illusion if that's the route you want to take. Good luck! Mike

Andrew Mayne's Motorcycle effect is more of a crossover panel kind and comes as a surprise. It is published in Illusions FX. Otherwise, what Mike said is right.

I believe that another typical consultant, besides Jim Steinmeyer or Franz Harary, would be Andre Kole. I recall reading in one of his books once that he has notebooks filled with ideas, including several ways to make the moon disappear. Talk about a mega illusion!

Making the moon disappear might not be perceived as very "mega" at all, when you think about it.
It's distance renders it no bigger than a half dollar from our perspective, typically.
It's all in the reflexes.
