Hi folks,
This is about instituting change. Is there a name for making a change stick? Changing a working practice or tribal knowledge. What works up to now is an equilibrium. Behavior modification including certainty of punishment and greater rewards are a given - and we all know what 'really happens'. We have "inertia" as resistance to change. Do we use the term inertia to also describe the force that restores a thing to equilibrium? What do you think? JonT change, change, change. Change for fools

"If things don't change, they tend to remain the same."
😊 ...kinda meant as a joke. Jonathan, I believe most 'change' is initiated as a 'power shift'. The 'inertia' you mention, I believe, is 'the Power of the moment',....resisting. The word 'revolution' comes into play here, quite nicely,... 'e-volution', as well. Often I believe, the only 'true' change,...is development. Growing, from an established base. Foundation vs. Inertia. Climbing a tree vs. the Roller-coaster. Have a nice weekend. Thanks for the push, ...i wasn't expecting(!). gallagher |

I guess it would depend on your definition of “instituting” and “equilibrium”.

Is there a name for making a change stick? Learning. And all that entails. Behavior mod is only one, not necessarily lasting, method.

Learning gets us to "okay we could do it that way". But we have always done it "this" way - a force acts to restore the system its prior state. What makes the new way into "our" way?

OTOH, I forget who said it (Fuller?) that basically you have to wait for the old guys to die off before a new scientific paradigm is fully accepted. Well this is overly reductive, but for a short post, I'll venture to say change on a societal level becomes widespread when the results favor those who control the material means of production. Otherwise, you get "return to equilibrium" also known as counter-revolution.

The law has its effect. i.e. Napoleon, as I recall, brought in a law that told the French among others how to number houses: odds one side of the street and evens on the other and his how we do it.

Consider QWERTY - at our fingertips - which might be displaced by emoji or other meaning-glyphs as they prove more efficient.
Is it as simple as shoelaces - convenience? We learn that knot as sufficient unless faced with context which requires learning more? What do you think? ****** That would be Max Planck commenting about browbeating and disapproval.

As a conspiracy theorist, I naturally think we are living through a script. That the scriptwriters give us the “now we do it this way” and a lot of it is done through entertainment. The scriptwriters have advanced technology and make it available as and when it suits them. The scriptwriters gave us these keyboards for us to give them what they want. What they want is information. As a fella once said, “Knowledge is, indeed, that which, next to virtue, truly and essentially raises one man above another.” Perhaps it is not a word but a number.
