Are they trying to use a free email account, such as hotmail, gmail, yahoo, etc.

Used to be you had to use a work or school email, then once you were in, you could change it to your free account.

This has nothing to do with free servers or accounts. We sometimes close registrations while work is being done or when we are inundated with bot registrations. This is only temporary and will open again.

Update: registration is open once again but free servers are still not allowed.

It might be worth adding some text to the 'registrations are closed' message you get when trying to register, just explaining to try again, when, how etc. It took me nearly six months to get registered on here!

The message saying Registrations are closed is pretty much self explanatory. Many times when they are closed, it is unknown when it will reopen. It all depends on why they were closed. It could be a server issue, a maintenance issue or simply that we were overwhelmed by bot's for example. I can't remember the registrations ever being closed for 6 months but it doesn't matter. When the problem was resolved, they were opened up.
