NIcetodd, you will be happy to find that you can hear the coins land in the pocket just fine..... Its a great routine, the coins are nice and now Im really out of this conversation, I never post here for a reason and the only reason why I posted was to correct and give info. we did a bad job rolling this project out clearly. Again sorry for any inconvenience

I feel like some people just need to pick things apart in a bit too much detail. If I (or someone else) did decide to use our own dollar sized coins (+ appropriate other coin gaff) would they fit/work in the provided shot glass? The glass looks good sized, so will assume yes, but not sure if the glass has been specifically chosen for half dollar workings as well. |

I pre-ordered based on how much I enjoyed Curtis's wonderful routine, but am equally disappointed about the coins. Once again, the advertising copy/trailer was grossly misleading. Michael makes a good point that the weight of the coins (being lighter) is surely going to reduce the noise of the coins arriving, which is really the best attribute of the routine. I'll reserve final judgement until mine arrives, but this should have been offered in two sizes (half dollar or dollar) regardless of the selling price. It's really too bad that Murphy's doesn't do more beta-testing with knowledgeable magicians before releasing products. Why have a stain on what should be an otherwise fantastic routine?

Bottom line is that this is such a basic issue, it never should have happened. U can’t sell a routine that has sound as a main element and include cheap coins that aren’t as visual and don’t make anywhere near the sound shown in the video. Quality dollar replica coins cost next to nothing these days. Just do a basic search. So for the price they are charging, there’s absolutely no reason they couldn’t have included dollar size coins.

The PropDog live show today discussed this issue, along with some other aspects of the trick, including the glass (a positive).

Its exactly what I was saying all along. We shot this not knowing what we were going to doing with it. Then Curtis who was in NY working with me on Bobo left and went back to Hawaii. Months later we decided to go with half dollar size coins...and that's where were at. Most magicians use half dollar size coins.
As far as the coins hitting the jumbo and making the sound. I can do it every time and so can Curtis....with due respect to Prop Dogs who seem to be righteous guys they just need to practice it for a few minutes and they will have a successful result. I personally do this again with these coins and it kills.... This is a professional routine performed by a pro and without the coins its worth the $75.... Because its something a pro would use. This time Im really out of this conversation..... |

Congrats to Curtis and Kosmo for releasing a totally commercial and enjoyable routine to magicians. It's not often that one can obtain a routine that packs small but has the ability to play so big! Great job!

Ladies & Gents:
I just received mine. I can say with 100% certainty the sound of the coins is audible in a parlor or small stage setting (and of course closeup). One thing I will point out, is that Curtis does have suggestions in the video as far as which coins make the "best" clinking sounds and all I will say is that Prop Dogs didn't watch the video before befuddling the issue with their very light demo. I am very satisfied with this. The only very small criticism I can muster is that I (as a hobbyist) would have liked a little more time devoted to the sleights in the video... but that is really nitpicking. |

To be fair, during the very brief non-scientific experiment performed quickly by Dave on the PropDog video that was used to determine the sound was difficult to hear, it was not performed as it would be in the routine. In the routine the coins are clinking against the jumbo coin which may produce a louder and more reliable clink. Dave didn’t do this. Also the first coin could produce the weakest sound with it getting slightly louder as more coins are in the pocket. Cant say for sure as I don’t own this and have never tried.
But as with almost everything in magic, practice and the proper technique probably plays a role as well, and of course the size and type of pocket could be a factor too. It does make me wonder if you could replace the jumbo coin with a standard shot glass so when you bring them out you have a glass within a glass, IOW they are nested. Then putting the smaller shot glass in your pocket *could* possibly produce a more audible sound. Just a thought, I have no idea if this is possible or feasible. |

Curtis is an amazing extremely talented magician. This routine is awesome!!!
But for the price, I'd much rather buy the routine, and let ME decide which coins to buy. NOT saying that the current price is too high for what you get at all. And I am sure the half dollar size is perfect for those that want that size. Nothing wrong with that as well. But I was thinking it was dollar size when I saw it first. As far as the sound going into the glass.... that is not why I want the dollar size at all. It's that I have started using dollar size and that's what I want. I'm not diving in as I would much rather have the dollar-size and don't want to buy this, then have to sell the coins and buy the dollar size etc. I will gladly go to Hawaii and re-shoot this for you! |

Or a download only would be my preference.
Although I still may prefer Harbottle’s coins and glass routine. Makes me wonder if Harbottle’s could be adapted to work with different coins. Been quite a while since I did it. This prompts me to get it out again. Maybe a best of both? |

Videoman raises an interesting point that I would like to revisit. (Wish we had the option to edit our posts) He is absolutely correct and I missed that point with my post on Friday. In watching Curtis perform the routine again, the larger coin in the pocket acts as a landing pad to give the audible sound of the coin landing, which Dave did not do. With that in mind, I would revise my earlier comment that you lose the audio sound to it. Without having actually seen the coins that Kozmo provides, I can not actually profess to how light the coins are. For those that have received it and can speak to the coins first hand, I would yield to their knowledge.
Still a well thought out routine. |

I think we can all agree that this is a lovely routine. I know that I am VERY much looking forward to receiving mine. But, getting back to all the nonsense about the coins being half dollar size. As I said to Kozmo privately...Unfortunately, we can't 'unsee' things in trailers. So, given the choice, I personally would have opted for dollar size coins despite the high price because the routine is THAT good. But Kozmo is 100% correct that most people prefer half-dollar sized coins because of the more affordable price. Anyway, let's enjoy this wonderful routine and hopefully they'll sell a ton of units and later re-release it with both options

I got this the other day been playing with it since and I'm very happy with my purchase.
First Propdog should actually sit down with the Download/video and then re-shoot their review. Curtis does not say that "all" of these coins are difficult to find. He only says the ONE Chinese coin that he uses is rare as far as he knows. However you can find other suitable coins. He does suggest trying it with larger coins. Curtis has very large hands so he uses dollar size coins. This isn't new information. This routine works as is with the coins supplied. The sound works fine for me. The ad was clear half size coins. I do not see an issue here. As I posted on FB this routine and coins is well worth the price.

The trick comes with half dollar size coins. Once you buy the routine you can decide to perform it with whatever you want, that's your choice. It is not the responsibility of the magician to supply everyone with whatever choices they desire.

I think that is why some of us were asking about the possibility of purchasing just the routine and allowing us to source whatever coins we want to use. While we have Michael in here participating, I would like to put a plug in for his large new tome. I am about halfway through it and it is probably going to go down as one of the most influential books in not only coin magic, but magic in general. Highly highly recommended. |

I am not being critical here but a I think it is hard for magic producers to make money with a download only product and that is why the frequent requests to sell just the routine are not always met.

I normally don't do this, but I was shocked at the accusation.
I understand people may want to receive exactly the props they see in a demo, but that's different from "false" or "shady advertisement." In addition, I think we're all responsible for reading the copy before we purchase something, after all, it is OUR money, wouldn't it make sense to do our part to know what we're paying for? No one is going to do that for us. And if there's any doubt, we can ask via email and avoid purchasing until we hear back. The ad copy said, "half dollar size." I think it did it's due diligence. I do not use half dollar sized coins. Yet, I decided to purchase it anyway. But if I failed to read and wasn't happy with the coins received, that's my fault. Now, I can offer some help. The routine works in a parlor/platform/stage environment for the same reasons one of it's predecessors, Kainoa Harbottle's "Victorian Coins and Glass" does: sound and the volunteer's reactions and responses as they act as the "eyes" of the audience. That means for most of the audience, seeing the coins isn't the main part of the experience. And it doesn't need to be; I know because I've been in the audience at The Magic Castle for both these routines and the audience reacted strongly. If in your show, you DO prefer or need the audience to see the props clearly, that's 100% valid. In that case, you probably would NOT do this or any other coin trick on stage. Coins are relatively small. Oh, and Kainoa's routine uses... half dollars. So I wouldn't worry about coin size. "Echo" is going to work for you in a parlor/stage environment. I can empathize with you, too. Do I wish the provided coins were bigger? Yes. But 1.) I knew they were halves before purchasing, which means I am fine with it, AND... I was pleasantly surprised to receive MORE props than expected. (If you watch the explanation, this will be driven home even further) and... 2.) I can confirm the price would be MUCH higher with dollar-sized coins. About $257 to get close to what Curtis Kam is using for just the props... PLUS the value of the routine and instruction (which by the way is the most valuable thing here, so that's a considerable addition) and this is assuming Ton Onosaka's blue Japanese Coin and the dollar-sized U.S. penny are still available and are only $10 each (NEITHER of which is a reality). I invite the folks here to recognize the accuracy of the ad copy and Kozmo's admittance of making an error with the older photo and be graCIOUS. Recognize too, the value in a magician releasing a routine they created and be grateFUL. For many of us, that's how we become and remain magicians: because OTHERS create [powerful magic] and sell us the RIGHTS to perform it as if it's ours. Wouldn't it be sad if attacking and accusing caused magicians to stop releasing? There are definitey shady products, creators and manufacturers out there. But this isn't one of them. Hope some folks here would agree. Thanks for reading. |
