Hi! Can you spare a minute? I have a question about spare tires. My 2006 Toyota Corolla needed a new temporary donut spare tire replacement. The one that came with the car wore out after being used several times over the last decade. The tire size designation on the old donut spare was T125/70R16. When I ordered a new spare off of eBay, the seller had a picture of the tire I was buying, and it had the exact same size designation. However, when I received the tire in the mail it was a different tire than what he or she had pictured in the eBay listing. The tire that I received has a designation of T125/70D16. The obvious difference between the two tires is in the letter. R vs. D. The new tire looks identical in all other aspects and with all the other markings that are on the old tire. My question is whether this slight difference in the tire size designation means that the tire I just bought off of eBay won’t fit my car. Anybody have any thoughts on this? I did a little research online and came to the conclusion that it’s not a big deal that the size designations aren’t exactly the same and that the new temporary donut spare tire will work with my 2006 Corolla. I just wanted to get some other peoples’ opinions on this matter. Thank you so much!

Internal Construction
The R identifies that the tire has a Radial construction in which the tire's body plies "radiate" out from the imaginary center of the wheel. Radial tires are by far the most popular type of tire today representing over 98% of all tires sold. The D would identify that the internal tire body plies crisscross on a Diagonal and that the tire has a "bias ply" construction. Tires using this construction are for light truck and spare tire applications.

Thanks, John! I did not know any of that. So it looks like my new temporary spare WILL fit my Corolla despite having a “D“ instead of a “R“ in its designation. Good to know!

Did you try putting it on the car?
You are a much braver man than I am. I would never think of Ebay for something like a spare tire. Especially if you use it so much that you wore the first one out! It seems like lot of flat tires to me so you'd get your monies worth from a factory replacement.
