Excited to announce a project we've been working on the last few months is launching today!
How would you like to get access to a monthly magic journal, The Disclaimer, which will contain three tricks to read and absorb? Previously unpublished magic from the likes of Curtis Kam, Jeremiah Zuo, Danny Cheng, Tom Dobrowolski and Richard Hucko as well as from occasional invited special guests like John Bannon? How would you like to receive a hardcopy book of the year's Disclaimers (all 36 tricks and some EXTRA material that didn't see the light of day in the magazine)? How would you like to be invited to a Magic Shack Zoom Session every month? Come hang out, get the skinny on material not yet seen by any other magicians, goof off, watch us eat our respective dinners, you know, whatever you want... There are currently only TEN spots available for this reward. So first come first serve. We will let you know when it fills up. Find out how you can get all that AND more by clicking https://ko-fi.com/thedisclaimer?fbclid=I......q3mTfKvw We've got over a years worth planned out as well as some fun surprises along the way. First review is from Japan by Yukishige Kadoya. Thanks Yuki-san!
Magicians: I rarely post about magic here, so this entry serves as an exception to that rule. First a really short review, but if you want to read my humble and longer 726-word review, click “Continue Reading” DISCLOSURE: I have personally known the author, and he is one of my good friends. However, the following review is completely unbiased. Short review: Highly recommended this new magic magazine, “Disclaimer.” The price tag of $6 is a bargain price. What have you got to lose? ----- Tom Dobrowolski, a wonderful magician in Chicago, has started a very interesting project with several of his talented magician friends. Tom has been publishing his excellent lecture notes every year and giving a lecture each time. However, I think it is quite difficult to give a lecture on the current situation of the COVID-19 pandemic. So, Tom-san and his talented friends decided to start a monthly magic magazine. This is the magazine “The Disclaimer". Sadly, except for the major magazines, self-published magic magazines don't last very long. There is the problem of editing and writing, but also the problem of controlling the quality. However, this magazine, founded by Tom, has easily solved such problems. Talented magician, Jeremiah Zuo’s writing is impeccable, and his illustrations show all the details. All readers will be able to learn from this magazine with no needless effort. (I also laughed at “Disclaimer” posted at the beginning of the magazine!) So what about the quality of the material itself? It's also perfect. This first issue contains three effects. Hawaiian Coin master, Mr. Curtis Kam’s coins across, “Coin Roll” (based on Jay Sankey’s effect, “Bridging the Gap” from his first book, “Sankey Pankey” [By Richard Kaufman, Kaufman and Greenberg, 1986]) is a really nice one. A spectator watches coins roll across the table from the performer’s hand to hand one by one. You have to search for a suitable steel ball, but handling itself is not that difficult (you will have to practice this routine till everything goes smoothly.) Jay Sankey’s wonderful “meta-perspective” pseudo explanation idea works very well here. As the endnotes state, you should perform clean and short coins across with 3 coins before you perform this handling. If the spectator doesn’t know what is “coins across,” meta-cognition never happens on the spectator’s mind. I start to practice this routine. I can’t wait to show this routine to my audience and friends . You want to watch his performance on his Instagram account. https://www.instagram.com/p/CAZCGU6ApBd/... Tom’s handling of famous Larry Jennings’ “The Visitor,” “Visiting the Friends” is a well-constructed routine. Everyone noticed that the ending of Jennings’ original handling has the problem, and many magicians tackled this problem for years. When I try Tom’s handling, the boldness and cleanliness of the solution made me chuckle. This is a kind of “A-ha experience” to me. You should try it, you’ll like it. Tom's method also increases the clarity of the effect, I think. When I perform “The Visitor,” I always go back to late Howard Schwarzman’s “Night Visitor,” but I’ll try Tom’s routine for a while. The wonderful magician who appeared on “Penn & Teller Fool Us”, Jeremiah Zuo’s take on Asymmetric Transposition, “Asymmertry” is really interesting. As for me, I am not a big fan of this plot. However, I think his work is elegant and very well constructed, with a hint of the Spanish school. In terms of handling, I think his handling for the multiple lift sequence is something worth considering― really quick and visual. It takes a lot of practice, but I think it's well worth it. Each month, 3 to 4 effects are scheduled to be published in this magazine. If the quality of this magazine can be maintained, the magazine will be very promising in the future. This magazine gives something for everyone, so I believe subscribers will enjoy content every month (It would be great to see some stand-up work in the future.) If you can get this wonderful magazine for $6 a month for a year, I think it's a bargain price. If you pay $12 a month, you'll receive a printed book every year, with 12 months' worth of content, plus bonus effects added and expanded. Also, if you pay $25 a month, you can join Tom and his wonderful friends every month for a session using zoom, “The Magic Shack Secret Sessions.” I think this is also very attractive. If you want to get all the issues, please hurry up. The April issue has already been released. In about 10 days, this wonderful first issue will no longer be available. Congratulations on a great start to this magazine and I hope it continues for a long time to come. Good luck! Highly recommended. ---------- “Disclaimer #1” edited by Tom Dobrowolski, 39 pages, Chicago Magic Bash Publishing, 2021. Subscription rates: from $6. Visit their website in above post for detail: |
