Known of this trick since I was a child. Never started trying it out until now. Got the Tower book via Kindle and made up my own first set out of standard printer paper.
Over the next couple of days I worked off and on with them, getting used to the folding/unfolding process. I had a pair of duplicate keys, and was using one as my generic 'object' as I practiced. Didn't work with the papers yesterday, then today I grab my wife and say, "You wanna see the 'craft' I've been working on?" She says, "Sure!" So, I grabbed one of the keys to use, sat her down at a table, unfolded the papers, placed the key into the smallest paper, did the folding and unfolding, only to find...the key. Hmmmm. I thought I did it right... I tried again...and again...and again... Each time I would unfold, that stinking key would be right there! It wouldn't go away! "I know I'm doing this right! WTH?!?!" Etc..., etc... Finally - after folding/unfolding about SIX TIMES, my mostly patient wife moves on. Then it hit me. "I've got 2 of these keys...where is the other one?" Welp, you guessed it - the last time I'd worked with the papers I had left one of the keys inside. When I went to show my wife, I unfolded the papers to the side that DIDN'T have the key. I placed the identical key in the papers and went back and forth and back and forth thinking, "Why won't this stupid key disappear?!" It was small comfort to know that I *was* doing it right, haha. I was just going from one key to the other, over and over and over and over and over and over again! I did finally show her what was supposed to happen. But I'll say this - at no time did she notice a discrepancy in all that folding!
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

Here's a set I made up from some foil paper. Only drawback is the other side of these papers are the same, cardboard-ish color:
