I know there are a lot of Wannabe Copperfields out there doing the same type of illusions as he. What are your thoughts on using Copperfield music? Would you consider that trying to be "like" him? I have found a few songs that would fit perfectly in my show. They are for completely different illusions than in the one in which Copperfield used them? Any thoughts?

I don't see a problem with it personally, as long as it's for a different illusion. I'm sure there may be some people that beg to differ.
Just keep in mind that DC pays big time royalties to use that music...

Have you ever considered listening to some of the good, royalty-free music that is available to all of us? You might find something that will work just as well. The licensing fee DC pays isn't as much as you might think it is. Anything is negotiable.

Royalty Free music? Where do you find that?
On the same note is anyone going to throw a fuss over a small no one doing a magic show using music not royalty free. and How would go about obtaining the rights to use music? |

There are several firms and individuals that sell royalty-free music. Some of them advertise in the various magic magazines. Jay Scott Berry sells some that he wrote.
Regulations in the UK are different from the regulations over here. If you are performing in private homes, you don't have to worry, but if you perform in a public venue, other than a school or a church, then the venue is supposed to pay for it. However, if they don't then you do.

Somehow, the royalty holder found out and pulled the permission for the school to do the show and they had to stop rehersals. Ridiculous? Maybe. But still it's best to be careful. |

That's a completely different situation. In that situation, the school has paid the fee for the use of the "book," and they have to follow the licensing agreement, which in this case states that there are to be NO changes to the original. This is to keep the original intent of the author.

Trying NOT to pay the royalities is usually not worth the effort. ASCAP charges $7.50/show for everything you use. However, if you play regular theaters, hotels, casinos, halls or other facilities where shows with music are frequently held, the facility has usually already paid up through their license. Then you pay nothing. You should furnish them a list of the music you use with how it is licensed (BMI, ASCAP, etc.).

Over here in Germany it depends on the size of the venue, ticket prices, how many people are in the audience...
We once had a two hour show, different acts, not every act with music, had to pay 600. euros... Well, lot of money, but a good show... habilo |

Size of the audience here is also a factor. However, the first break is 5000 or less and usually covers it. (It also has to be a paid admission.)
You can make a better deal than that with the copyright owners, if the show will use the music a long time. In Alabama and Tennessee there are so many good studios until you can have what you want written and recorded for you for about a day's work (depending on what you make, of course) and then you own it. Check out the "jingle mills" that make commercials. Bob Magic By Sander |

I don't know in US but here in Canada, when you rent a theater they ask you on the contract if you are using any kind of music. If you use some, they charge you the fees for the royalties. Usually it is not so expensive. I don't like to use royalty free music. Generally the production is not good and they use some bad keyboard.
As to use the same music as Copperfield... I don't see any problem at all. Even Copperfield use the same music as other magicians. Remember his version of McDonald's aces. That was use first by Alain Choquette. If it fits with your style...well...go ahead. Johnny |

You haven't heard the good royalty free music then.
There is some excellent stuff out there. Do a Google search. Bill White is one that I use quite a bit. I use some others too but they are not coming to mind right now.

If you notice a lot of David C's music actually comes from songs that have been out there. I will recommend like everyone else has said that you try to find some royalty free music. It will save you in the long run. You can also buy programs where you can put in different sound effects, loops, and even take some out. As Far as DC wannabes, my name is Daniel Copperfield and it's been that way since I was 16. I don't use any of the music that he's used but I have to admit I'm guilty of doing some illusions he's done. LOL.
