Mr. Talbot,
Got mine a few days ago. Thought I had a routine down, but you just had to change that, didn't you! Great idea. I hope you don't mind that I borrow it? Bill |

John is certainly brilliant for routines I use a lot of his magjc wagon ones. I have never seen him come up
with anything that isn’t so thought out and so logical. He is a very clever and generous man Gaz 😊 |

I borrowed Mr. Talbot's presentation yesterday and performed it for my wife who is my toughest critic. She really likes this and I think it's primarily because I let her handle every single piece. I took out the foil and quarter, had her make the impression, then I introduced $TAMP (already set) and spun a story about finding this oddity in one of our local antique shops and what it could have possibly been used for (she actually thought I meant this because I purposefully did not show her my package contents when it was delivered and so this truly was the first she had ever seen it which made my tale more believable). She never once questioned the orientation of the quarter impressions. I then asked if she would help me try an experiment using creative imagination to which she agreed. I then opened $TAMP leaving the plunger lying on its side with the quarter heads-up side of the plunger facing her. I then asked her to take the piece of foil and start rolling it into a ball and as she did so that she focus on the image of a quarter. As she rolled the foil ball I asked her to try to feel the sensations of the milled edge of the quarter, the smooth and bumpy textures, etc. When she was finished I asked her to place the foil ball into the tube which she freely handled and replaced it on the table. I offered for her to then pick up the plunger and insert it into the tube and to make sure she pushed the plunger completely down so it would SMASH THE FOIL FLAT. I was sure to focus the strength/stress in my patter when telling her to ensure to smash the foil flat. She had no clue what was coming....I then had her again focus on the image of a quarter and told her that when SHE WAS READY she could remove the plunger and dump the foil from the tube. She waited about 10 seconds just staring at the $TAMP (to me this felt like forever) and she then followed the instructions. When she dumped the quarter out of the tube her eyes widened, mouth dropped open and then gave a huge smile as the quarter flipped out onto the table. She kept turning over the quarter and also shaking both the tube and plunger hoping to see the ball of foil.
The joy in this is that I let her do EVERY SINGLE STEP in handling the prop and never once did I say anything about an attempt to mint or stamp a quarter. I solely focused on a piece of foil and an odd aluminum cylinder/plunger. I asked what she thought and she said, "that was a wicked cool experience". Of course, she then asked me how much that cost and after I told her she said it looks like a great investment that will probably last forever and that I needed to show this to everyone as she continued to shake the plunger and fiddle with the tube......PRICELESSS for me! A well machined piece with really tight fitting specifications that is made to last. No concerns or self doubt on the purchase of $TAMP. -Brian |

Great presentational angle John! And I agree with Kranzo about Shape of Astonishment being a perfect lead in.

Thanks for sharing Brian! I believe 90% or even 95% of the participants will never question the orientation of the stamp. Just as it is in majority of effects with discrepancies.

Wouldn't be nice for a kid to stamp a chocolate coin that you can give away?

John Talbot’s routine got me wondering about the possibility of using the foil impression along with a metal disc. I have a slug that’s probably the right size. I’m curious how it would look and if it would lock tightly.

Glad it worked out for you Triple B and I agree having the spectator do as much as possible is a great way to engage and strengthen the impact. Thanks for sharing your experience. Videoman not sure I am fully understanding your thought with the foil and slug. Are thinking of putting the metal slug and foil ball in the unit together, or just thinking of using a plain slug and stamping that instaed of the ball? In theory if you have the right sized slug it should work. I think the foil ball works because it is almost believeable you could stamp/compress it, but it is fun to experiment so give it a shot!

The slug didn’t work well, but using the foil ball is fantastic IMO.
First, it really looks (and even kind of sounds) like you are really flattening it (because you actually are, at least partially.). So the effect becomes instantly more believable. Secondly, I believe it takes some of the heat off the actual method because obviously you couldn’t flatten a steel ball bearing by hand. But the foil ball could conceivably be flattened or hidden so it helps direct away from the idea that there is only one place the ball could be. Thirdly, the solid ball bearing makes small marks on the stamp and canister but the soft foil doesn’t. This is not a big deal but the marks could worsen over time. Now I kind of wish I’d never used the ball bearing. I really think that for a split second a spectator will believe the foil ball has been compressed into a coin. On an offbeat you can switch out the coin and follow up with a simple coin bend or penetration and leave it with them as a souvenir. On a side note, I probably hadn’t made an impression of a coin in a sheet of foil for over 50 years and I had completely forgotten how amazing even that looks. That is magical looking by itself. Thanks again to John for being so generous with his creativity. |

I think you are right Bill, this routine by John ticks so many boxes and like you say protects the gimmick.
I love the idea and I agree the the tin foil impression also fools the brain into making the slight discrepancy seem correct as well. Brilliant stuff saving the gimmicks life to boot Gaz 😊 |

Quick question on this (and I'm not trying to spark more debate her, just asking a question): has anyone had a spectator question the dates from the stamp and quarter?
I'm sure you can get a bunch of matching quarters if needed, just curious if this has ever come up... Thanks! |

Hi Jay:
I have only had a chance to perfrom this a few times so far using my foil ball idea. I have been using a quarter with a different date (live in Canada and only have a few US quarters at hand). It has not been noticed yet as I think the spectator is more intriqued with looking at a "foil" coin. Having said that I have orderd a few quarters with the right date for future use. Am really enjoying this prop! |

Regarding matching dates on coins. I perform a coin flurry routine by David Roth with a jumbo 3" coin ending. Some people don't notice the different dates, they just enjoy the interaction. There are others with scrutinizing personalities who will notice and make sure they tell you about the discrepancy.
I try to find coins ( mostly use Kennedy Halves) that will match the jumbo coin.
Guilt will betray you before technique betrays you!

Mine came in. Fantastic work. Top quality. Easy to perform. I did a quick couple of performances last night at a friends bbq and a hit for sure. Two things !! I performed it using the foil idea and kick ass for sure. Only thing is they wanted to see it again. Have to come up with a good reason why I could not. Then perform with the steel ball and also killed. Of course asked to perform again but I said I had no more balls. Will have to check my wife’s purse where she keeps them !!!! Got a good laugh then moved on to the next trick awesome perfect love it.

Some guys just always buy two of everything because they are collectors.
