Folks - we are SO excited to share a brand new release from the maestro John Bannon! 'Zoombaya' is the first of a series of releases from Bannon featuring virtual, internet-friendly stunners you'll also want to do live, up-close and personal. This incredible routine allows you to determine which of eight random cards your participant is thinking of, all whilst turned away, or on videoconference, over the internet or even over the phone. And you never see or touch the cards!
It's a Bigblindmedia exclusive and you can check it out here - https://bigblindmedia.com/products/zoombaya-by-john-bannon Here's the scoop - Totally self working. No angles, no gimmicks, no sleights, no off-camera shenanigans A remote miracle where you never touch or see the cards The eight cards can be from a borrowed deck No elaborate pre-trick nonsense, start immediately from a shuffled deck Works over video call / phone call / in person / on stage! Perform from the other side of the world Can easily be done with objects other than cards! |

Looks interesting. I a huge fan of Bannon's but not of downloads. However, for $10 I'll probably pick this up.

I have to hand it to John Bannon and BBM, I really appreciate that they keep putting out quality stuff. BBM seems to have taken the DVD/download mantle over from L&L, lots of quality releases from them and they run some good sales.
Right now they have the Ultimate Self Working Card Trickes DVD bundle (volumes 1-3 plus an extra bonus DVD) for only $39.99. Add Awesome Self Working Card Tricks on sale for only $10.00 and you can get you a lot of great magic for $50. I’m not a shill for them, but just thought I would pass along a good deal when I see one (Magicians helping Magicians and all), and BBM’s customer service has always been top notch whenever I have had issues (nothing they did wrong but just helped me out with something). |

Thanks @Robert P.!
We have already had some pretty amazing feedback for Bannon's Zoombaya. Check this - "Zoombaya is a perfect impromptu self-working effect. Ideal for virtual performances, but equally - if not more - effective over the phone or in person. All your spectator needs is eight playing card-like objects (so they can be mixed and dealt), such as 8 different postcards, business cards or credit cards. It lends itself to many presentational ploys such as listening for a tell or detecting a lie. I love this!" Richard Hatch "Just look at Liam's face in the trailer. That's the face of someone who just got fooled. Zoombaya is classic Bannon: interesting method, fun to do, fooling, usable, and strong impact. This has become my go-to phone or Zoom effect, and it will become yours too. Highly recommended!" Tim Trono "Zoombaya is the perfect mix of practical magic with astonishing results. I already have a spot in my parlour show for it and you will find a place for it too. No set up, no prep or pre-show and no hassle. It is so diabolical!" Alan Rorrison "Bannon strikes again. Zoombaya is diabolical and virtually amazing! Love it!" John Guastaferro "If you locked John Bannon and Jim Steinmeyer in a room, and told them they couldn't get out until they fooled you, this is how they'd do it. Simple, direct, and unfathomable, Zoombaya is everything most virtual tricks aren't." Curtis Kam "Zoombaya is a simple-to-perform card trick stunner, that works just as well over Zoom. As a bonus, John discusses ways to perform the routine without playing cards." Charlie Randall "An absolute brain buster! Not only a great Zoom trick but it's perfect for live shows as well. Another knockout from the Bannonator!" Cameron Francis "This is some dastardly business. John Bannon's Zoombaya will be scrambling brains till the end of time." David Regal "When Bannon talks I listen. When it's a versatile, fooling trick that can be done from a borrowed, shuffled deck, onscreen OR live, I not only listen but I add it to my repertoire. Done." Raj Madhok |

After watching the video performance, I just don't like the "Your card is not in the first row is it" question. And then they say no, and you have to respond, I didn't think so. Really, if you didn't think so, why would you ask that question?
I showed the performance trailer to my nephew who is 16, doesn't do magic himself but enjoys watching it. His first response was "Oh, he messed up, he thought it was in the first row". I think most tricks where you have to fish with a question like that diminishes the effect. |

That is the biggest weakness of the routine, in my opinion, but it's also the easiest to fix I think. Don't try to dodge the miss. Highlight it. State with confidence, "I'm sure of it. Your card is in the first row." ... "Oh, I was completely wrong. You know what? Let's try something completely different. Get rid of all the cards. Close your eyes, picture the card..." blah blah blah
With the miss, you now know the exact identity of the card. Change gears and milk it. That's what I would do, anyway. My chief worries about this trick aren't so easily repaired. In the demo, the participant is experienced with cards (obviously, lol). But most of my audience is not so experienced. Can I give them directions precise enough without it becoming suspicious? You can tell Liam to deal out in a row face up, and trust that he'll deal left-to-right, one at a time. I would likely need to specify that for many of my spectators. And then if I specify so many details, there's a real risk of their missing one, like dealing face down instead of up. I'm also struggling to see this trick with non-magician's eyes. I love that it's a very clever assemblage of a handful of simple principles. That appeals to me, and I don't think ordinary spectators will figure it out. But will they really be impressed and enjoy it? Would love to hear from anyone who's tried it on laypeople.

Anything that works for you is great. Zoom magic is no longer a growth industry (I hope) and I find procedural tricks like this unbearable and certainly you can only do 1 procedural trick like this in a show. I didn’t figure it out but I did not care. Not everything that can’t be figured out is magical (I know that our job) and many things that can be figured out are magical. Forgive the rant. Just my 2 cents.

Heya folks - Zoombaya is not a Zoom trick. It's a crackin' trick to perform live one-on-one, that just so happens to work as a trick over the phone / video chat too etc. For this kind of 100% hands-off, sleight free routine there will obviously be some procedure (otherwise it would be real magic, no?), but it's a baffling effect that takes Steinmeyer's famed idea up a gear. Horses for courses innit!
Here's some more feedback we have received in the last couple of days on this routine: "In the remote world of Zoom, when the outcome of everything a spectator does cannot be seen or otherwise ascertained by a performer and yet the performer can prove that his Psychic Bandwidth knows no bounds, you have a Zoom-worthy miracle! P. S. The operative principle is cool, too!" Jon Racherbaumer "Zoombaya is a beautifully constructed self-working masterpiece. An easy to do miracle, don’t think twice. It’s John Bannon, NUFF SAID!" In fairness to this particular trick I was off my meds when I wrote my “review”. My thoughts could easily apply to many other recently released hands off miracles. Of course horses for horses and you can’t argue with a full performance video, you know what your getting. No disrespect to John or Liam, I’m big fans of both.

Nice to see a full routine but as happens often, it gives it away- not bad though

We're definitely living in an era where there are more opportunities to do magic remotely than ever before. So even though this is a great trick to do live, it's an ideal routine to use if ever you are on the other side of the world, or wanting to do something easy and fooling over the phone or via Zoom/Skype.
As usual John Bannon and Big Blind Media bring us the goods, with fun magic that is fooling, and yet very easy to learn and perform. The fact that you get immediate access to your download right after purchasing is another plus. All of Bannon's released from Big Blind Media are excellent. Here's the performance video, from the product page. |

And it saves creators a lot of "Other Brothers-this-is-false-advertising-hassle". Kudos to John and BBM for selling this way. It simply creates a better relationship with customers.

A slight correction to a statement made earlier in this thread "Your card is not in the first row is it". The actual statement in his video is "you didn't think of a card in the first row did you?" This actual statement comes across better and can be interpreted positively by the spectator either way.
And remember he has the spectator holding the card in their hand at the time he makes the statement so it's almost as an afterthought statement. And then he immediately names the card they're holding in their hand so they don't have time to think about the equivocate statement. Another point is that the magician's voice inflection is very important for the last two words of the equivocate statement "did you" . If the magician's voice inflection is on the upswing then the spectator will probably interpret that the magician thinks the card was from the first row whereas if the magician's tone of voice is very flat when saying "did you" then the spectator will probably interpret that the magician thinks the card was not from the first row. I believe the "did you" should be more on the flat side. On the old What's My Line TV show I've seen Dorothy Kilgalen trick John Daly into getting a "yes" answer when she should have gotten a "no" by posing the negative question such as "he isn't a government worker is he". Either way she gets a "yes". Yes he is a government worker or yes he is not a government worker and then she gets to continue with more questions. |
