Seems like a pretty simple question, and yet a definitive answer eludes me...

Before I pitch my limiting definition,
I would like to expand it a bit.

I'm going to write of 'Street Performers'.
....Magician, Juggler, Musician,...'Statue'.

For me, there is an essence.

Street Performing is the ablity of creating...
an 'Interest',
a Stage,...Theater(!),
..a 'SHOW'(!..!),
....where none was expected or sought.

Arousing un-suspected interest,...appreciation.
Based on true,...'curiosity'(!).
....not touristic entertainal hype.

'Un-expected', is an important word,
in my,.."what is it?".

For ME,...this is the tickle.
..the Essence,....the Blessing,..
the Magic of the Art.

I guess,
more than 'a tickle',
it's the Pulse.

Have a good day,
Gallagher

I define "Street Magician" as a style: somebody who approaches somebody in the street (or in some other non-performance venue) and performs a magic routine. The intent is to capture the event on video or for personal satisfaction. It's a style best exemplified by David Blaine.

It's different than busker (or street performer). A busker is somebody who performs in the street with the intent of making money. Performance can be magic, music, juggling, and more. There are two primary types of performance. 1. A Trickle show. The performance is continuous and spectators "trickle" by and drop money in bucket/hat/container. You often see musicians doing this: playing as people walk by. 2. Pitch Show. The performer gathers a crowd. Has a set routine/act. Closes the show by asking for money. (Make them Stop. Make them Stay. Make them Pay). Magicians and Jugglers often do this type of show.

This is what bounces around in my head, and I've never put it down on paper (or digital screen) until now, so may need refinement...

If a magician is an actor playing the part of a magician, then a street magician might be an actor and an usher and a ticket taker and a prop master playing the part of magician, only without a theater or a proper stage and with an audience that didn't set out to see a performance and had no intention of paying for admission.

"What is a street magician?"

The original essence of performing magic in the world.
"There's no time to lose," I heard her say.
"Catch your dreams before they slip away."
"Dying all the time, lose your dreams and you could lose your mind.
Ain't life unkind?"

Someone who takes charge of a public space and turn it into a impromptu performance space.
The material is solely written for that audience and that environment.

I feel that if your using the street for practice or fine tuning material for other performance environments or using it to get a video or TV show clip you are in danger of moving away from this.
But I totally feel its very open and Gaddy comments really sings out to me.
Enjoy your magic,

and let others enjoy it as well!

Anybody can do magic on the street. We used to call that close-up magic. To me, a street magician is someone who passes the hat for money. Not as easy. . .

Agree with Tom Frank here: when I think Street Magician I don't think David Blaine, I think of someone who is passing a hat as the defining characteristic.

Busker
(Busk’er) noun:
A rare breed of street entertainer in
Search of the best place, or “pitch”
To perform their artistic endeavors

I realize the question was what is a street magician?
Thought I might throw this into the mix
Now days it seems most guys and gals just find a place to work and that’s it.
Not many travel from pitch to pitch if you will. Many claim it but few really do.
I feel to be a seasoned street magician (Busker) you must travel some, expand your pitch’s.
Meet others that are working the streets around the world.
See if you can sustain yourself financially.
Keep em smiling,
Nickoli
