So I have bought on ellusionist.com a few things one being their how to be a magician set. Flop 2.0, a coin trick, and an invisible deck, a few mystery decks that are supposed to be high quality decks .
In addition I subscribed to their magic stream which has a lot of cool things. I have also subscribed to MasterClass where I just finished penn & teller course. I have gone to vanishing inc and subscribed to their MasterClass which gives you three lessons a month and a magic show with q&a On ellusionist I’m thinking of buying their Kickstarter kit how to read minds, I have heard good things. Have you heard of anything. My questions are this What are good inexpensive cards that you can buy in bulk to make gimmicked/gaffed decks. Some card tricks you need to destroy or modify cards. I don’t want to do that with $10-15 per deck cards. What do you suggest? Is there anywhere you can buy just card boxes? Some tricks I’m learning ask you to make a trick box. Are you aware any sites where can perform and charge a fee for our magic shows? |

Dollar store cards are often of questionable quality, I'm also thinking of the "Maverick" brand at WallyWorld. They lack the 'air finish' that you find on a lot of better quality brands like Bicycle. Sometimes I will use dollar store cards as cheap disposable cards when I'm working on a new effect that requires gaffs or cards that will be destroyed. Then when the technique is solid I switch to more expensive brands.

I like the fact that most people are familiar with that brand and assume to some extent that it is not gimmicked. I think for me it's always a balance between affordability and quality. What is your preferred brand? |

Myself, I like using Aristocrats, but I do have some store brands and no brands I play/practice with. One never knows when a well used deck will be offered with a smirk or challenge of you can't do anything with these... And thanks to things taught by Harry Lorayne, I can.

Aristocrats look like really nice cards. I've also seen that "smirk" before. You never know when you will be asked to preform

That being said, given that in your own words you are a beginner and you just barely got started, I don't think performing is the right thing to do quite yet. Don't get me wrong: performing is important. But practicing and rehearsing should be 50% of your time spent. More importantly, I don't think you should charge anyone until you know well your material... I recommend you start performing in "practice groups". Check the "Mostly Magicians Virtual Open Mic" on Facebook, for example. P! |

Best advice I can give you NateTheGreat: Start slowly, and first build up your card magic fundamentals and techniques. In other words, learn how to do proper shuffling, card controls, and more. I wish I'd done that when I started card magic 30 years ago.
I especially recommend Roberto Giobbi's Card College 1 & 2 - The Complete Course video set. And here is why. Giobbi is generally regarded as the best teacher in the world on card magic technique. You can download his first lesson (30 minutes) for free right here, and it will give you a good idea of what to expect. Nate, would you pay money to attend a show in which the star, the producer, the director, the writer, and the organizer had all started learning a couple of months ago?
Seriously, be honest. How many magic shows have you paid to watch? Are you certain your own show is as good as shows you’ve paid to see? Put in some time practicing for audiences. Zoom/Skype/FB/other streaming media can make this easy. When people offer to tip, give them your PayPal info. The other thing you can do is busking. Go out and try to gather a crowd wherever there are people. Entertain the crowd and then ask them to pay. But it is much too soon to sell tickets to a show at this point. Patrick |

One thing you can do if you need to destroy a card or cards is to buy a couple of Pinochle decks in the same back style. These will provide two copies of the 9,10,J,Q,K,A of each suit.
Unless the illusion you are doing specifically requires a lower or mid value card, you can remove and save any of these from your original deck and replace it with one from your Pinochle deck to tear, burn, gaffe etc. Just compare the backs beforehand to make sure the color and the registration of the back is close since some lots may vary slightly in color or how the design was registered when it was printed. Sometimes a card with a minor variation that is hard to detect without close scrutiny can be an advantage if you think about it. If you go this route then Bikes are probably your best bet. Also gaffing cards takes practice, patience and in some cases tools to do them correctly. You will likely go through a quite few cards before you get a good one. If you don't have the patience for it you are better off buying them, poorly done versions will tip the gaffe and ruin the illusion for you and everyone else. Another reason to go with Bikes since most gaffes come in Bike style back designs |

Old school was a limited number of manufacturers, lake, bicycle, etc. However the most common was red or blue bicycle rider backs. Problem with all these fancy designs available now is that most people use a basic deck to play cards. Using a fancy deck draws attention to the deck itself, taking attention away from your performance. For that reason I stick with Blue or red bicycle riders... They can be purchased at Costco, Sams Club, Amazon, 12 packs for under $20 |
