What do I mean with this?
All we know (this is going to hurt some magicians out there) that David Copperfield has met an international fame that no other magician has met. In fact (let's let David Blaine aside)if we ask to some people Who is the Most Famous magician in the history of magic, there is a GReat probability that get as response as Copperfield as Houdini. But lest's face something,.... David Copperfield will be 48 in Sept. He is not that Young Guy doing a lot of Shows anymore. Yes, he is still doing a lot of shows, but in a few years he will stop that Huge Active career. So..... How many years does Copperfield's Career has? 10 years? maybe 15? but more important: Who will be the Next David Copperfield? Wich magician in the world would be capable to have the same Charisma, Showmanship (and so on)that David Copperfield has? (i'm not referring about being in the right place at the right moment) In my opinion....That magician hasn't showed himself yet. Of all magicians I have had the opportunity to see, no one had make me think "This could be the next David Copperfield" Maybe he hasn't born yet. Maybe he is just 10 years old right now. Is he AMerican? Is he European? Is he Asian? What do you Think? |

Its going to take a long time before we find someone who could come close to DC. Until someone takes the risk of being original and stay away from DC's formula and mold, we are going to have to wait and see.
I see so many Illusionists go as far as dressing like DC. Its just sad. Same thing with street magic. The Blaine wanna be's comes a dime a dozen. This is just my opinion. I cant wait to see the next MAGICIAN to break these molds. Cheers, Rannie

Apparently Darren Romeo was "anointed" by Gay Blackstone. At a convention she symbolically gave him the rights to perform some classic trick. I think it was the flaoting light bulb.
Does this mean that the magical powers that be, including Gay, will be promoting and helping Darren be the next vegas headliner?????? Hmmm..... |

Well, Darren Romeo already has Sigfried & Roy backing him. If the Blackstone family have also given Darren their "blessing" , so much the better . Darren's his own man and not a copy of Copperfield.
Whether he will ever be an international star like Copperfield is hard to predict at this point. Whatever, Darren Romeo is someone to watch closely . I don't know if there needs to be a "next David Copperfield" . That sort of diminishes his own uniqueness and puts an unfair burden on the person that is supposed to fill those shoes . If however , you mean "who will be the next major star performer who happens to perform magic ?" then it could be any number of people. Probably someone will come out of left field. Too many variables , including "luck" , to predict who it will be. I think Mac King is definitely still on the way up. I would not be surprised to see Mac get his own television series one of these days . (kicked off with a few magic television specials , starring Mac ) I think Penn & Teller will continue to be major players . Right now if you ask people in the U.S. to name a contemporary magician it's probably going to be Blaine, Copperfield, Penn & Teller , or Lance Burton. Sorry, I'm no closer to naming the "next Copperfield" than when I started writing this. |

The next "David Copperfield" is going to be Dennis Kuwalski. Currently Dennis is eight years old and living with his parents in a modest three bedroom ranch style house just outside of Schenectady New York.
And while at this point in time he has absolutely no interest in magic, being much more interested in his Yu-Gi-Oh cards at the moment all this will change next year when he goes on a family vacation to Disney World. There he will buy his first trick, a hot rod, from a sales clerk named Ben at a Magic Max outlet. Ben, who himself desperately wants to become the next David Copperfield will never know that he was in fact tthe one who sparked Dennis' passion for magic as he will perish shortly thereafter in a horrible fanning powder mishap. Dennis will never hear of this tragedy as he will be too busy showing all of his friends and neighbors his unique combination hot rod multiplying rabbits routine. His insight and ability to combine old magical effects into modern presentations will esculate his magical carrer. By sixteen he will already have been on the cover of Genii and have performed both in Vegas and the Magic Castle. By 22 he will have appeared on National Television with his own special and be well on his way to becoming a household word. Women will want to be with him, men will want to be him. Fame fortune and a place in history all because he walked into a magic shop and saw that magic could be more than the sum of it's parts

Yes.
I would put my money on Payne's prophecy . It will be something like that . However, I hope poor Dennis gets to go to the Magic Masters at Downtown Disney instead of stinky ol' Magic Max at Old Towne or the Mercado Shops . True story: I purchased a hot rod demonstrated for me by Dan Stapleton at the old magic shop on Main Street U.S.A. in DisneyWorld back in the 70's . I can say with complete assurance I am not the next David Copperfield. I'm not even the next Dan Stapleton. Actually , I wish I was the next Bev Bergeron , who I saw at DisneyWorld on a couple of trips there in the 70's . Probably not, but I can dream can't I ? |

Funny how no women are mentioned...I'd like to think that they have just as good a shot at being as big as Copperfield.

How great would it be if a lady became the next magical superstar? However, the sad part is that society probably wouldn't allow it. At least not yet. Just as a female has never even gotten close to becoming President of the United States, a male dominated field like politics or magic (some would argue they are one in the same) would require a mental metamorphosis to allow a lady to assume the throne.
As for the next major magical icon with a Copperfield-like appeal, we'll just have to wait and see. Blaine was on his way, but couldn't carry a touring live show with the Copperfield spectacle and grandeur. Darren Romeo, albeit a talented singer, has the spectacle, but his show just wouldn't reach the heights of a Copperfield. Just my opinion. Spectacle does not equal success. Nor do looks, ability, or magical aptitude. The next major magical icon will not be decided by us. It will be decided by the public. -E |

Hmh...who will change the face of magic forever ...like Copperfield did? Difficult to say... I think it will be an American again, because most of the so called superstars in Magic are Americans...it also depends if the media will support his rising to the Top!
these new guy/girl will have to leave their own footssteps in the ground...
I asked if she like cardtricks. she said:No! I did four...

I think that when David is ready to call it quits or just can't do the demanding tricks annymore he will introduce an aprentice that will eventualy take over David's place in the magic world.
Hey he may even have his own reality show on the next apprentice. lol Not like Donald Trump a real apprentice of magical proportions. I would watch that. |

Wasn't Copperfield teaching a college course in Magic at NYU at 16? I seem to remember hearing that.....anyway, DC is a very gifted and talented magician, which is often overlooked.
As far as young talent...how about Dan Sperry or one of the Reed girls? I think whoever it is, it will take a LIFETIME OF DEDICATION! Scott Compton

It would be interesting to see who arises. However, Copperfield has no plans to retire anytime soon. With Copperfield being a mild traditionalist when it comes to his thoughts, theories, and beliefs, HE will more than likely name his successor. Throughout magic history, it was very common for a magician/illusionist to "pass the torch" on to someone who was worthy of the role and responsibility.

Isn't it clear by now, 2 years after the thread was started, that David Blaine is the one?
Darren Romeo may be excellent and "annointed" by DC and S&R, but take a poll and see how many know of DB and how many know of DR. Branson and Las Vegas are not the whole of the United States.

Actually, truth be told, I wouldn't say that DC has "annointed" anyone. Remember, in show business, Press Releases are full of PR spin.

Interesting thought: If David had chosen to retain the plain "boring" name of David Kotkin, instead of the more comercial, marquee worthy Copperfield, would he have gone as far?
Maybe, and probably...but I often wonder how much is in a name. Now we have a fellow with the last name of ROMEO (of Shakespeare note) (Boy, all the girls must SWOON over THAT one!) And here I am stuck with the ever dull last name of "Working"
The difficult must become easy, the easy beautiful and the beautiful magical.
