Predict the future using a simple psychological experiment that your audience won’t see coming. Created by David Jonathan and Nikolas Mavresis, this effect blends real science with real magic to predict your spectator’s choices 100% of the time. This is The Stroop Test. Here’s what happens: A set of cards is introduced that have the names of the colors printed on them. Each of the words is printed in a different color than what it reads. A spectator is asked to choose a number, and the magician deals down that many cards. The color on the card is shown to match a prediction the magician made before the trick even started. The Stroop Test comes with custom printed cards that do all of the work for you. There are no complicated spelling procedures or unusual methods of displaying the cards. The number the spectator says is the number that you actually deal. Multiple clever principles interlock to create an engaging and baffling prediction effect. Start testing your audiences with The Stroop Test.
Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.

Hey, David Jonathan here. Thanks for posting about this - I'm so thrilled to offer this to the community as it’s such an engaging, practical effect that I'm sure you will want to carry everywhere. This is also my first joint release with Nikolas Mavresis and we cant wait for you to see what else we have in store!
Here's what a few folks have kindly said about Stroop Test: "Absolutely fantastic. Super commercial, engaging, easy to do and instant reset. Superb!" - Chris Congreave "Stroop Test ticks all the boxes. Captivating, engaging and magical. The method is devious, making this a magician and audience pleaser." - Joel Dickinson "I've been looking for a good Stroop Test routine for ages and I finally found it! This is commercial, it makes sense and is going straight in my close-up and online sets!" - Luca Volpe "A clever method hidden within an interesting presentation. Win-win." - Manos Kartsakis "This is exactly the kind of magic I love. Clean, smart, strong, simple and very practical." - Haim Goldenberg "I love to involve real psychological principles and unusual experiments in my work." - Dan Harlan Here is the link: https://www.penguinmagic.com/p/16153 As always, Im happy to answer any questions (within reason) that you guys have! |

Hi David--I know it says "easy to do" but that is all in the eye of the beholder/magician. Is this easy enough for an adult hobbyist just doing no sleight magic for family and friends? Thanks. This looks great.

There have been a handful of magic/mentalism routines that have explored this premise before (since you mentioned book test, you are most likely thinking of Daniel Meadows' Infamous, which is excellent). This is simply our take on adapting this wonderful psychological premise in a way that makes sense, is streamlined and is highly engaging - in that regard, I think its an ideal opener for a mentalist as the props themselves instantly hook your participant, then you hit them with the revelation, which establishes what you do and has them intrigued to see more. |

I immediately ordered because this is an excellent opener for strolling gigs and casual performances. It introduces a genuine psychological principle that will be interesting to spectator's who've never seen it before. Plus, the cards appear to be nicely produced and the method is dead-easy if you haven't already guessed the workings. Still, this should fool your audience badly as I cannot imagine them figuring this out.

I have found spectators really enjoy and engage with this sort of effect and with this release adding a nice twist. Well done to David, Nikolas and Penguin for releasing this.

Would have been nice to have had a stage size cards. Nice idea.

"The New York Papers," Mark Twain once said,"have long known that no large question is ever really settled until I have been consulted; it is the way they feel about it, and they show it by always sending to me when they get uneasy. "

YES - definitely. I have bought several effects only to later see an updated (larger, for parlor/stage) get released. Are there plans, or any thought to releasing this in larger cards? ryan |

Is this only available from Penguin US? I see it has free shipping, but not sure if there is a more time efficient option.

I bought this immediately because I think the premise of doing mentalism with Stroop cards is such a great idea. Well done, David and Nikolas. I do, however, think this trick is a little expensive given the simple props provided.
I'll probably end up printing my own set of custom cards. Although the original experiments included brown and purple, they didn't include black or orange; I'd rather orange was omitted because it is easily confused with brown. Technically, the colour brown doesn't exist; it is an illusion dependent on orange in combination with low luminance or saturation. That said, this might make an interesting addition to the presentation when people do get the two muddled! Printing the words on a dark grey background might help. Stroop also experimented with coloured shapes (circle, cross, triangle, square and star), so I'd like to add these to the cards to make the test a little more challenging, e.g. a BLUE triangle with the text "Yellow Square" below it. As this set of symbols is analogous to the Rhine ESP symbols, there are also opportunities to develop a full deck of "Stroop Cards" to allow many different effects to be performed. You could also get away with using a more limited set of colours (Red, Green, Blue and Yellow). The method is excellent and is very easy to perform. However, if I go to the trouble of getting custom cards printed, I'll probably use the method from Nick Trost's "Eight Card Brainwave" because this allows for a more "consistent" ending. Marty P.S. The psychologist who developed this was John Ridley Stroop (or J. Ridley Stroop), and, surprisingly, he spent most of his life as a teacher, preacher and religious scholar. More information about Stroop can be found on the John Ridley Stroop Digital Archive. |
