Is there a message board app or a recommended way to browse this site on mobile? Finding it not incredibly mobile-friendly as is!

The same feature and processes are available on your mobile device as on a desk top computer. It's a little more difficult because of the size but other than that, it should work fine.

Dave is correct and good vision is certainly a plus due to diminished size.

Definitely not the definition of mobile first UX.
Oh well... |

I guess you'll have to explain what you see as a problem. The Café operates the same on mobile devices as it does on a computer, just a little smaller.

That's exactly the issue. all good, not going to get into mobile vs desktop design/ux here. You answered my question. I'll survive!!

From my perspective, a mobile experience is one that is optimized for when one is on a smaller screen than, say, a desktop computer -mobile phones and tablets being likely candidates for this particular website. Not having to zoom in/out manually to browse and read, being able to see the whole reply interface on the screen at once for easier engagement, ways to subscribe to forums of interest such that it’s easier to identify new posts and topics in the areas a user is interested in. It makes it easier for someone, say sitting on the couch with their tablet, or in a waiting room on their phone to completely use the service in a friendly manner. It’s actually not as important that all functionality be available on a mobile interface - better to have less functionality that is easier to use (and thus drives up user satisfaction and engagement).
If you load up some major websites on your tablet or smart phone and compare to a desktop, you may notice some differences. Penguin magic, for example, is rolling out a mobile experience that makes it easy to find products while on your phone. |

Not sure exactly what you're saying but remember, when you view the Café on a cell phone or tablet, you're not using an app but simply viewing the website as you would on a desk top computer. Hence everything is available both on the computer and the mobile device just smaller. On a cell phone, you may have to enlarge the viewing screen to read everything but the functionality is there.

I did a quick mock up by modifying the CSS manually to represent some small tweaks, based on my current phone size (roughly 460px by 780px). https://imgur.com/a/FJXDXvG
This is roughly 1.5hrs of time. Not a lot of energy. I left font and colour choices alone since I know it its vital to the happiness of key members that it remain green and yellow. Mostly I just used CSS to hide content that I deemed "less-important" given available screen space in order to focus on the following use cases: 1. A Member is looking for new content, since their last visit, while on their phone 2. A Member is interested in reading the post content, less focused on reporting or replying. (I would actually opt to explore and user-test sort-order: with the current structure, possibly sorting in reverse order such that clicking on a Topic will show the most recent replies first (show initial post, then invert the conversation) such that it's easy to find the newest information (this could be toggled by user preference). Some threads can be substantial in length, and the pagination access is tricky on small screens. |

All well and good but the original posters was looking to be able to have all of the functions we currently have, on a mobil friendly app. Your changes appear to remove the ability to send pm's, report posts, and view sponsor ads. I suppose if someone didn't want all that functionality, and didn't want to be able to reply or report, your suggestions would be fine but then it wouldn't be the MagicCafe. The MagicCafe was designed to be different from all other sites and those features make the Café what it is.
