TOTEM by Alex Ng
A devious mentalism piece that resembles REAL MIND CONTROL! "A STEAMLINED AND SURE FIRE ROUTINE COMBINING A NUMBER OF CLASSIC METHODS RESULTING IN A DEMONSTRATION THAT WILL ASTOUND AND SURPRISE YOUR AUDIENCES." - COLIN MCLEOD "THE PROPS ARE DEVIOUS. THE BLENDING OF METHODS BOTH NEW AND OLD ARE QUITE CLEVER AND WELL STRUCTURED. TOTEM WILL EASILY FIND ITS WAY INTO THE DAILY REPERTOIRE OF THE MODERN MYSTERY PERFORMER." - PATRICK REDFORD "THIS IS LIKE HAVING A MINI ACT IN YOUR POCKET.THE WAY PSYCHOLOGICAL FORCES ARE USED, CONNECTED WITH THE FINAL PHASE OF THE ROUTINE IS VERY CLEVER SO THAT YOU CAN ALWAYS BE ACCURATE IN THE FINAL REVEAL. THIS IS SOMETHING THAT FOR SURE WILL BE ALWAYS IN MY POCKET!" - LUCA VOLPE "I LOVE SNEAKY METHODS. TOTEM DELIVERS ONE AFTER ANOTHER TO GIVE A MULTIPLE REVELATON ROUTINE THAT TAKES UP NO POCKET SPACE AT ALL. WHAT MORE COULD YOU WANT?" - JON ALLEN Totem is a multiple-phase mentalism routine that ends with a surprising climax. A gold-foiled coin is introduced and the spectator is asked to hold onto it. Throughout an imaginary journey with the magician, the spectator would end up with several decisions in their mind: a random number, a color, a city, a flower, and a painting. As the final surprise, the coin that the spectator held the entire time is revealed to be a poker chip that matches every single decision they made. Everything is made possible with the ingenious structure of the routine combining multiple mentalism principles like psychological forces. Your prediction will ALWAYS HIT dead on. It is truly a killer tool that deserves to be carried in your pocket all the time. Included are: - A specially designed Poker Chip - New exclusively-designed gimmicks - 100 sheets of Gold Foil paper - A special gimmick Official Trailer https://youtu.be/E9DsIWh6x0Q Available exclusively on https://hhpresents.com/products/totem-by-alex-ng

That looks interesting. The combination of secure hits with other eventual hits is really nice. That gives you a safety net for the pure psychological forcess
But I'm not the biggest fan of the detection. I think thta you probably should combine it with a Sixth Sense or Flux to be a bite dafer. Lastly the chip itself lends itself more to a casual performance. For a really nice serious and elegant presentation the chip might look a bit cheap. The revelations could be way more beutiful. |

Greetings everyone, I am Steven from Hong Kong and currently reside in UK. I can have some sharing for those who are interested in Totem by Alex Ng, a tool for magicians / mentalist released by Henry Harrius Presents.
Unlike equivoque, or magicians choice most of us aware of, some times psychological force is not 100% hit, with experienced performers can increase the accuracy rate through experience by means of their countless performances, however, it took years of time. What if, there is a way to use psychological force every time without the fear audience not hit answers which we lead them to? Totem is the answer Alex Ng to solve this problem. At the same time, provide a mind reading experience for participants. It is a well constructed routine which enable performer to first apply psychological force as an warm up with participant(s), followed by a which hand game that performer can correctly guess which hand they hide the poker chip wrapped with gold foil. As a finale climax, everything they mention during the process reveals on the poker chip. As a bonus, the gold foil can reveal one more information they think of, in the performance it will be a play card. What you received will be Totem (the poker chip), gold foil (100 pcs for wrap the chip, and you can actually reuse the same foil if not tear it apart), a special gimmick for which hand part, and the gimmick is re-designed from ground up (not electronic and if you got high end which hand device you can use your own, the gimmick provide is for those who without the high-end device and still want to perform the whole sequence. I personally tried the provided gimmick and it is very accurate. I always fear losing those high end which end device lost when carry them, and in Totem everything fit inside your trousers pocket, ready to any time). Of course, a download link of instruction video about 60 minutes where Henry and Alex will go through everything step by step. Alex is a perfectionist, he never satisfies until the effect is so close to perfect (We all know there is no perfect, but we all strive as close to perfect as we would like many masters in magic). Totem spent time around 2 years from ground work to finished product and every step including the design of the chip, routine, patter, gimmick design you could imagine about. The development of Totem, like many other great effects, is standing above the shoulders of many magician giants and fellow magicians. All effects / magicians inspired the development of Totem is credited. As mentioned by one product review on youtube, the which hand sequence was inspired by Colin Mcleod. Totem received blessing from Colin for his kind permission of the release, and he even endorse Totem himself. Here is a brief background of Alex. Alex Ng has been a big influence of Hong Kong magic community in the past two decades. He was the champion of Hong Kong Close Up Magic Contest and Champion of Asian Magic Association (AMA). He involved magic projects including live shows, TV Magic Specials, film, even consultant for many celebrity magicians in Asia. The world-release of Totem only display 1% of Alex creativity and passion in magic. I sincerely hope that the world magic community will know more about Alex through Totem as his first step to publish his creations. (Note: I get NO financial gain to recommend Totem, and I have known Alex for more than 15 years, he generously shared his knowledge and experience with me through our session with many other great magicians, his knowledge in magic definitely astound everyone.)
Most memorable moment - with Maestro Juan Tamariz & Consuelo Lorgia in FISM Busan 2018.

This looks interesting and I did enjoy the review by Nique Tan. I think, for me, this is something that I would like to see demonstrated in person.
I have seen many other great tricks and passed them up because seeing the presentation, I knew that my performing style would not mesh with them. |

Yes, looks interesting, but I wonder, when Colin Mcleod is mentioned, could Totem's revelations be a variation of this:

I really like the look of this. Portable, intriguing and different from the norm as well as an engaging presentation which has very good spectator involvement. I'll definitely be following this up.

Thanks for your support!
TOTEM is my favorite mentalism effect. I never leave home without this and have been polishing this routine for over 3 years. It provides a safety net for all my favorite Psychological Forces and a surprise ending climax which is held by the audience all the time from the beginning. Sometimes I don’t even need to do the Which Hand process and all the forces are directly hit! With this I can be comforted to maximize the effect and try my best to create a miracle for my lovely audiences. The proposed script takes the audiences on a magical journey with you and experience a beautiful Europe trip together. The chip is so organic and exactly looks like a normal casino chip. It is portable and can be performed anywhere anytime without table and angle restriction. Moreover, you can also tailor-make your own ending climax in order to suit your own style or purpose. Hope you enjoy it! |

This does look very good, but I wish that you could only buy the magnetic chip and foil sheets because I own so many magnet detecting devices already (Sixth Sense, Flux, Scan 3D etc.). Also, I prefer to wait until it's available from a U.S. distributor because of all the global transit issues. But as far as the routine goes, I think it's quite excellent for casual performances. This will surely blow some minds!

I am a lttle hesitant here.
First you obviously try to lead your spectator to follow a certain path, say Europe, Paris etc. and if this fails you use the "If the gold coin is in your right hand, think of X, and if it is in your left hand , think of Y!" Then you show you prediction. (In this case, you unwrap the gold coin.) (Se my post above from the Jimmy Fallon show. Here the prediction is written on a dollar bill.) Well, I have used this modus operandi for many years and I think that if you add the fishing in the beginning.... well!? In my opinion it is to muddle the effect. Or, is it only me? But, on the other hand, using this chip you do not have to write or make a new prediction every time. A plus here. So: I could probably use this, in the way I describe it above, without the initial cold reading part. But the gold foil is a great idea, though! Just my thoughts on a great theme in mentalism, or is it mental magic? |

I personally feel this is definitely mentalism rather than mental magic. Had it been the latter, I would not have pursued.
I have obviously not yet received this effect and so do not know the workings but the developing of a story/image in the spectator's mind is a little along the lines of Michael Murray's Between the Lines, one of my favourite and most performed effects. Neil |

Thanks Thomas for sharing your thoughts on TOTEM.
Just like equivoque, it’s one of the most powerful tools of mentalists but poor script may ruin or muddle the effect using it. Therefore, when I was creating and polishing this routine, I sowed the seeds in the script and storyline for handling different scenarios naturally and smoothly. I believe different mentalists and magicians can use it in different ways and presentations for suiting their own style and purpose. There are many possibilities. P.S. I love Michael Murray's Between the Lines too! |
