I saw Henry Evans lecture the other night in Sydney. He was a great performer with some great ideas.
However, EVERY single effect he did in his lecture required that I buy something else from him. The prices ranged from $20-$320. Not one effect could be performed without one of his gimmicks. Is this fair? The lecture was only $30 and I didn't feel like I was paying $30 for a sales pitch but really, that's all it was! |

I saw Henry lecture in NJ last year. I also purchased his lecture notes which do contain several effects that do not require gimmicks.
That being said, I agree with you Nicholas that most of his "great" effects required you to buy something from him. But the lecture notes were not a bad purchase.
My new DVD ("The magic of David Corsaro") is now available from your favorite dealer. Watch the DVD that Daryl, Jon Allen, Shawn Farquhar, Boris Wild, Marc DeSouza, Asi Wind and Paul Green ALL ENDORSE.

I just watched one of his DVDs and he had some GREAT non gaffed effects on it (e.g. cards to tie)
I would have loved to have seen those! |

This is part of Evan's performance style...He was lecturing his magic, and whether his magic uses gaffs or not is his choice! If you are interested enough in his magic you would have bought the gaff you wanted.
I agree that it is a shame that a lot of his lecture material is gaffe, as it means that if you do not pay for the trick, you can't gain from the lecture experience. When he lectured at Blackpool, his lecture was all gaffs, but during the masterclass he taught a card on tie variation (possibly the one you mentioned) where the tie penetrates your body and one card! And a great triumph routine, using the old ruse of shufling the cards face up and down (actually into a face up half and a face down half), yet at the end he seperated the cards and they were seen to be in New deck order as well! owen |

Those effects are on his something more than an illusion dvds I reccommend you buy them, most of the stuff on there doesn't really require gimmicks such as the perfect triumph and cards on tie but also perfect control etc. when I watched modern times for the first time I was so amazed that bought th gimmicks needed fo this wonderful effect. if it really impresses you buy it! you cant take money with you when you die

I am always happy to buy effects which I like.
HOWEVER, what is the point of him lecturing on how these effects work when you still have to buy the instructions? Surely, these effects should be performed at the end? |
