Kenton's Knepper's compelling call to action concerning the theft of his creative works and others' can be read here:

Yeah, in another thread, Ian Rowland has pulled his 'Sense of Touch' effect for the same reasons. Sad, but inevitable I suppose, given human nature.

In light of this, may I suggest a thread/area to post listings of these illegal auction sales?

I say do what you can to help the creator by letting them know and hopefully they can handle it by any means they have available to them. This is just my opinion, for what it's worth. |

Interesting. I couldn't help but think of this old post when reading Knepper's diatribe:

Has anyone tried utilizing any of the pre-existing organizations either consistently to enforce intellectual property rights or to create a legal fund for such an endeavor?
There is a such an outcry when an "exposure" takes place. Stealing someone else's property rights should not be treated any differently. |

Photofnish,
Very good point indeed. Everyone should read that link! |

I did raise this issue a while back. I posted a link to an ebay auction that was a counterfeit 7th deceptions. The link got pulled as it contained the link. I subsequently PMd Luke Jermay but received no answer.
Glad it's stopped, though. These secrets need to remain just that.

Yeah,
This sucks, but I can see why it happens. I just bought both of Jermay's books from Kenton on special, and the total purchase price was $75, some special. But still great books and they don't deserve to be bootlegged. This whole issue comes down to price of magic secrets. Some people with no sense feel ripped off when buying this stuff and combat that by bootlegging it. What is worse in everyone's eyes, selling an illegal copy or being able to download an illegal copy for free? Nathan Pain

We all must do what we must do. Having published some minor works, it's appalling in such a secret society in which secrets are our business that we cannot respect others and keep the secret!
We make little to nothing off of magic sales. If we sell 1000 it's a hot seller! Now factor in everyone's cut, and I owe the distributors! Stop pirating. You do no one any good, and you just get my blood sugar elevated! |

This is NOT a slam on Mr. Pain, but I disagree. This whole issue comes down to greed. Selling unauthorized copies of someone else's work is theft, plain and simple. Knowingly buying unauthorized copies is receiving stolen property, plain and simple. The people doing this aren't stealing because they think the free market system is unfair - they're doing it to abuse the free market system by trafficking in stolen property. Quote:
What is worse in everyone's eyes, selling an illegal copy or being able to download an illegal copy for free? Well, we can compare selling an illegal copy to offering illegal copies for free (downloading is merely a tool for distributing the material), or we can compare knowingly buying an illegal copy to knowingly receiving an illegal copy for free. In either case, this is clearly theft, and causes very real damage to the author in the loss of sales. Is there a moral difference between selling stolen goods and giving them away? One might be able to make an argument for distinction if true charity were involved, that a desperate portion of mankind were being helped. But that isn't what's going on here. No one's going to die if they don't get a copy of 7 Deceptions. Distributing copies of Sense of Touch isn't going to cure cancer. The people who've been distributing these illegal copies have been selling them for personal profit. That's theft motivated by greed. But what of giving stolen works away? What's the motivation? There are those who "trade" illegal copies. But that's just simply selling the stolen work for another stolen work. Again, it's just theft motivated by greed. Are there really sites set up to distribute pirated works for free, as there are with music? Again, look at the motivation. Why would someone just give away illegal copies of someone else's work? One reason could be to set up an environment where people could trade copies of works. Well, I've already told you what I think of "trading" illegal copies of others' works. Could it be that the people behind the site believe the works in question are too expensive? Sorry, but in a free market system, that's not their decision to make. Are the people behind the site trying to be altruistic, charitable? Then it's misguided at best. No one needs these works in order to live. No advances to mankind are made by distributing illegal copies. The authors of the works are being hurt for no charitable gain to anyone. For the record, I have never produced anything I tried to market, and consequently I've never had any work pirated from me. I speak strictly as a consumer. But as a consumer, I recognize that theft is inherently unfair and counterproductive in the long run. :carrot: |

I then had to decide whether to bother creating and printing a second edition, which of course involves some expense. Since SOT has been copied, scanned, pirated etc. so widely, I figured there wasn't much point, in the sense that I'd be unlikely to make any money on the deal, and might be lucky to break even.

Ian,
In that case, I don't suppose there's any chance of you selling it as an e-book download ? Simon |
