Just a thought here... when I tell people that I do Magic, they think of kid's magic. People think of Magic as just for kids. I do magic shows for adults and kids, as well Mentalism. Is there another term besides "Magic" that we can use that will reflect that magic isn't just for kids?

I like using the word magic, as even when people think I do kid's magic it gives me an opportunity to really fry them. When someone expects less out of you, its just another opportunity to surprise them.

I guess if it happens repeatedly then it might be because of how you present yourself? I hope that isn't the case:-)
For the usage of any other terms, there are many. But it totally depends on your theme. Like if it's gambling theme, using "Magic" won't be appropriate in most of the times. Depending upon the theme, "Magical Journey", "Illusion", "Other-worldly experience", etc terms can be used. Zeppeli |

At this time I am not referring to a show, but in a private conversation with old friends an family. After I tell them that I am now doing magic, I usually end up explaining what I do for my performance.

Maybe instead of explaining, try showing them something. Again, some off the cuff demonstrations are often the best time to really blow some minds when they weren't expecting to be shown something like that. Usually when I tell someone that I perform magic it lends itself to them asking to see something cool.

Dkelten, I usually show them "Masterpiece" from Rick Lax.
But we're getting off topic. I was just looking for a word or phase to use instead of "Magic" when introducing what I do. |

You are correct and I apologize for getting off topic. I guess the only other word I use is illusionist or bizarrist/mentalist, but admittedly I do usually perform more bizarre magic in parlor style settings so your mileage may vary.

I do not "do magic." I orchestrate the conditions under which magic can happen. It doesn't matter what it is called. Magic is inexplicable phenomena. That will not change.
The concept has been mangled by marketers, Hollywood and Youtube. I expect confusion and am never thrown by it. Your post seems more about what being magician means and what is expected by way of entertainment. Not all magic performances are for entertainment. In 65+ years of performing the Mystic Arts in many forms, I have never had a problem with calling myself a magician. I welcome any question or confused notion as an opportunity to get them excited about having a "real experience of magic." However, I do not perform "on demand" nor feel obligated to accept any scheduling request. I do not charge either if I do agree to a presentation (just me, not a recommendation) I have performed tens of thousands of magic effects where it was not known I was a magician and the observer was not expecting me to do something unusual. The result was not "are you a magician?" but a discussion of what they considered to be impossible in their life or business. So, if one expects "must be magic" to be the outcome of a performance they must know you are a magician, even if confused by what that means. Today your first effects might be to educate an audience as to what magic is. Be proud to be a magician and be prepared to give them more than expected.

My favorite example is that of Barry Mitchell because it is similar to what I want to be. He tells people, "My name is Barry Mitchell and I'm the Entertaining Encourager. That's a humorist using illusions, storytelling, and audience interaction to deliver entertaining encouragement and education." If you are a magician, you could say, "I'm a magician. I occasionally read minds. Mostly I just enjoy amazing groups of adults and families with tricks that leave them with a sense of wonder. I think of myself as more of an entertainer. "I'm a professional entertainer. I enjoy performing magical illusions that bring happiness to children and families." The answer to your question is that you need to find a descriptive sentence to follow "I'm now doing magic." It's not just the job of magician that would have people guessing or asking for more info. I am a doctor. I am a lawyer. I am a politician. I am a cook. -- All these would also need a follow up sentence to tell people exactly what you did. |

Thaumaturgist --- a performer of miracles; especially a magician.
Working restaurants' I had name tag with Thaumaturgist on it as well. Peaked curiosity and a great segue into performing to demonstrate. Also as was mentioned, Prestidigitator. Had this on another name tag too. The root word Presti comes from the Italian word Presto, which means fast and quick. Digit comes from the Latin meaning fingers. Quick with the fingers. Sleight of hand. - Magician. Using the above terms starts conversations of curiosity as opposed to Magician. ( related to kids)

I wonder too. We might use foibles of imperfect perception to advantage, but nothing is altered.
"States of human perception?" I never though of any perception being a "state' or even "condition." For me, perception is a combination of sensory input, experience/bias and expectations - maybe hope. open to learn, though. Any sources for this view of perception?

With all respect, why not say you perform adult magic. They will ask what adult magic is like.
But who is your audience? There is nothing wrong with being a kids magician. Do you perform at corporate gigs? Have you been on the news promoting a show? Do you have a webpage? It is always encouraged to find a niche and be focused. But do you perform everything under the sun? What's in your case? Do you take one case to several gigs in one day? Are you a high energy entertainer? Comedian? Storyteller? Do you simply perform tricks? Are you only able to do tricks with cards? With coins? Do you have a costume? A well defined character? These questions may help determine what type of magic you perform. |
