Boy, this seemed to come and pass without as much as a whimper. Mindvention should be killing it with its new more convenient format. It's odd to me no one has talked about it at all.

I tend to agree. I haven’t heard or seen much at all about Mindvention. For an art form that is heavily about ideas, you would think there would be more discussions in general. It’s hard to find meaningful conversations on subjects these days.

Couldn't agree more. Even though most just attend MV to learn effects (tricks) you think there would at least be conversations about them. Seems the vibe has changed with new people involved, not to mention being virtual, although I would think that would allow more to attend and participate.

As I've said here many times before, the mentalism bandwagon has left town. Only magicians thinking they are doing mentalism remains, lol.

Even discussions here are about effects, rarely anything about the foundational elements of mentalism or performing mentalism rather than magic. I guess that left with Cassidy and Osterlind. It was the actual thing that drove both from this forum.

Seems there was a lot of great content, however, I didn't get a chance to watch more than half of it. Eric's Lecture started off great for example, I watched the first 45 minutes or so, but I think it was four hours long, and by the time I got back to it all the videos had been taken down. Chris Carter's lecture was stellar, (again, didn't have a chance to watch the last third of it, and wanted to take more notes.) It seems to me that using the format, or idea that attendees are going to commit to the time of the convention like people would during a live convention is a flawed concept. I get that one week is longer than what you'd get to have live, but it wasn't long enough for many of us to view a lot of what we wanted to see. In the end, even though what I did see was very good, I didn't feel like I got my monies worth, (where as for whatever reason, the year before, I did.) I think part of the reason is that during Mindvention this year many of us were more physically busy working. Where as the year before, we were stuck at home for the most part.

Just to clarify, I’m not disparaging any of the performers or presenters at this years gathering. I’m making more of an observation about the community as a whole to the event.

Matt, I do think you are right. Juggling working/attending does make things more difficult. I’m surprised there isn’t a more permanent or longer duration to the lectures available. Maybe they can tweak the format to fit the working pro’s life these days.

Mindpro, I agree with you about the loss of Osterlind and Cassidy. Looking even further back, many other pros dropped out before those two due to similar issues. I think it’s for the best that Mentalism may no longer be the flavor of the month. But it sure would be nice to have some meaningful discussions other than “Where do I start?” and “What’s the best _____?” Maybe some of us can try and change this by starting some better discussions? I’ll be sure to try.

I agree with both of you gentleman. I've never understood why the event and sessions aren't recorded. Actually, they are as I received the video of my Mindvention lecture a few years ago. I think attendees would pay even a bit more to have them to view, review, and revisit them as needed. They could be a premium item such as with the PEA.

I also agree that with their current format they should remain up for at least 30 days. The whole thing lately has much more of a Euro vibe than the American/Las Vegas vibe that it always had and was known for. As a producer and promoter of such trade and industry events for nearly 40 years myself, this is most important. They needed to walk a fine line to keep the longtime fans and attendees they've always enjoyed while using the opportunity to reach an entirely additional audience with its virtual online format. There is a different attendee dynamic at play that must be accommodated in order to succeed.

Graymatter_Fireworks, I agree that many great and longtime pros left far before Cassidy and Osterlind. In reality Bob and Richard stayed longer and tolerated the reasons and problems much longer than others likely because they had product lines as a source of their incomes, so they lasted a bit longer.

The problem has always been the same - we can try to start decent, professional, and meaningful discussions about the art and science of mentalism, but they always descend into the same outcomes. These outcomes are usually accompanied by hobbyist and amateur sentiments like "there are no rules," "it's up to each of us to decide what is best for ourselves," "it's how it is performed," "its just entertainment, that's all that matters," and so on, which each real working pro knows not to be true. There are rules, there is an industry knowledge and understanding which is different than the "me" way of thinking of the amateurs and hobbyists, its' not what is best for each of us, it is what is best for the art and industry, and there is far more to it than "just how its performed." There is so much than this forum no longer gets into. Then there is the whole readings thing. It should have its own forum so not to convolute the actual discussions and topics here.

The problem has always been the mixing of working pros with other non-working pros (amateurs, hobbyists, curiosity seekers, those just looking for how "tricks" are done, those than think mentalism is just another type of magic and all magic rules apply here to mentalism as well, etc.) as the foundational perspectives and interest are two different things on two different levels. So many that participate in the Penny forum do not even have this same foundational understanding. They don't understand that a magician performing an effect is different than a mentaist performing the same effect. Ideally, a forum for working pros to discuss working issues and concerns would be ideal but governing it would be a pain I'm sure. Or a mentalism forum just to talk about effects and this one to discuss actual foundations, operational, and performance issues. It would also take enforcement which would mean more work for someone.

I too was not disparaging any of the performers or presenters at this year's event. Just making some observations about the community as a whole and how Mindvention used to be such a talked about event with such great reviews and discussions following the event. For those that used to attend it was one of their highlights of the year. A happening. And now to hear nothing (other than from Luca which has always been quite biased for obvious reasons) is quite disappointing. Even the presenters don't post anything here anymore. Not even the obligatory "thank you to all who attended and some of the new faces I met..." Nada, nothing...crickets. Its sad and disappointing.

Mindpro,

Yes I think there has always been a balance between discussion and sales. It’s good marketing to interact and spread your ideas and work in a place like this.

I think we will always have uneducated and amateur opinions in a public forum. But it can be a good place to help educate or help new minds be aware of some of the realities of performing. I thinks it’s par for the course in a place like this. However, as mentalism has faded as the flavor du jour perhaps we will have less of the common pitfalls and re-treads?

If we can’t get more forums maybe we can request more sticky threads on common topics? Just a thought.

And you are right. It can be seen as poor and disappointing behavior, and at least bad marketing, for those that haven’t made it a priority to thank the community. I would just recommend the the consumer take note.
